VALENTINE’S DAY: St. Valentine was a Roman priest. He was sent to prison because he helped Christians who were persecuted by the Roman ruler. While in prison he converted 46 members of his guards family to Christianity. In Medieval England, a tradition began stating that birds chose their mates on the feast of St. Valentine. As this date approached, a young woman sent a letter to the person to whom she was engaged telling him: I would be for you a true and loving Valentine. Ever since February 14th has been known as Valentine’s Day.

FEAST OF ST. BLAISE: Friday is the feast of St. Blaise, the traditional day for the blessing of throats. The custom comes from a time when the entire year was filled with blessings. As the year unfolded, the Church offered up the whole of creation to bless the Lord. Blaise was born around 316 AD and lived in Armenia. One legend has him saving the life of a boy with a fish bone caught in his throat. The words of the blessing used today are: Through the intercession of St. Blaise may God deliver you from ills of the throat and other ills. He is also the patron saint of veterinarians. Blessing of throats will take place after the 8:30 Mass on Friday.

LETTER FROM BISHOP LAVALLEY:
Today marks the thirty-ninth anniversary of US Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision which legalized abortion on demand in our United States. Tragically, the practice of abortion has come to be common in our country.

The annual Respect Life collection of the Diocese of Ogdensburg will be taken up in our parishes at Mass today. Through your generosity the diocese will once again be able to make grants to organizations within the North Country that are working to support and enhance the value of life in the minds and hearts of our people.

Last year collection proceeds were used to fund grants to assist the Gabriel Project in five locations. These are parish based hands-on programs to support women and men and give practical assistance when crisis pregnancies occur. The 40 Days for Life initiative was assisted in Clinton County. Champlain Valley Birthright, and the NYS Right to Life Educational Trust Fund were all assisted as well. Each year from proceeds, grants are given to assist those who will journey to Washington for the annual January March for Life. One hundred fifty youth will travel in three buses to participate.

Your financial support can make a great difference to us in our ability to support our local initiatives to proclaim and support human life. May God bless you for your generosity!

ABORTION STATISTICS: While abortion is one of the most frequently performed surgical procedures in the United States, nationally valid data is available from only two sources: the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Guttmacher Institute – a research affiliate of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Data from both sources is extremely limited. Latest numbers are from 2005.

MARK’S GOSPEL: The shortest and earliest of the four Gospels in the Bible is the Gospel of Mark. It provides a fast paced story of the events of Jesus’ public life. The Gospel dates from around 70 AD, nearly four decades after Jesus’ death. It has no story of the birth of Jesus and no account of the resurrection. It is filled with so much imagery and suffering, that it is often difficult for us to hear it. The Feast of St. Mark is celebrated on April 25, and Christian art often portrays Mark with a lion by his side.

Following the service, a reception will be held at Trinity Catholic School.

BLESSING AT CHRISTMAS MEAL: Heavenly Father, we pause at this time to ask you to bless us at this Christmas time, and to thank all who have brought us to Christmas meal. Take into your gentle hands all who can no longer be with us because of sickness or death. Continue to bless all those have worked together since last Christmas. And finally, bless this food so that it may give us the strength to do all that God asks of us. We make this prayer in the name of Jesus of Bethlehem. Amen.

JOINING THE SAINTS: Halloween" is a name that means nothing by itself. It is a contraction of "All Hallows Eve," and it designates the vigil of All Hallows Day, more commonly known as All Saints Day celebrated on Tuesday, November 1.. Many of the Halloween traditions had their origins in the All Saints/All Souls religious traditions of the Catholic Church. Some of them were part of the Celtic pagan tradition including lighting bonfires, carving pumpkins, and going from house to house, collecting treats.

BAPTISM: Ally Marie Wilson, daugher of Mark and Crystal (Provost) Wilson became a member of the Catholic community through the Sacrament of Baptism on October 16th.

ALL SOULS ENVELOPES: In the Catholic Church the month of November is dedicated to the memory of members of our family, our parish and our community who have died. Hello Spiritual Friends, I am 36 weeks along in my life – just two more weeks until I am born. I weigh 6 3/4˙ pounds and I am about 21 inches long. I am gaining about an ounce a day. My lungs are developing surfactant now, which helps the alveoli expand. I am using my lungs to practice breathing and get the hiccups frequently. My mom can feel these little jumps! My mom’s doctor is encouraging her to rest as much as possible now so she is ready for me. Thus says the Lord God: See, I will lift up my hand to the nations, and raise my signal to the peoples; They shall bring your sons in their arms and your daughters shall be carried on their shoulders. (Isaiah 49:22)

From this point forward, I am considered “full term” and I could be born at any time now without medical concern. My mom goes to the doctor every week and she does not feel like eating much. NEW PRAYERS, SAME MASS : Beginning with the First Sunday of Advent November 27,2011 Catholics in this country will worship using the new English translation of the Roman Missal, Third Edition. Dear Spiritual Friends, 34 weeks ago my life began at my conception and I am getting closer to my birth. I weigh 6 pounds and am 20 1/4 inches in total length. It’s time for my mom to find a pediatrician for me and to finish my nursery. We are only four weeks away from my arrival date. My lungs are getting stronger and I practice breathing movements more frequently now. I have my head down and I will stay that way until I am born. My mom is getting a suitcase packed for our trip to the hospital for my delivery. It is hard for her to eat much now, because I am big. Then the children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked them, but Jesus said, “Let the children come to me and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these (Matthew 19:13-14)

Hello Spiritual Friends, my life started at my conception 33 weeks ago. I am putting on a lot of baby fat now and weigh 5 1/2 pounds. I am 20 1/4 inches long. I am gaining weight to keep me warm after I am born. I have been viable, or able to survive outside of the womb, for many weeks now, but I remain inside what should be the safest place on earth – my mother’s womb. My mom is feeling very big and is anxious about my arrival. Pray for my life, protect my life and defend my life. I have told you this so that you might have peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world. (John 16:3)

Hello Spiritual Friends, my life started 31 weeks ago at my conception. I am now 4 1/2ˆ pounds and my total length is nearly 19 1/2ˆ inches! I make breathing movements between 30 – 40 % of the time. I can hear, taste, touch, cough, yawn and look around. Right now my grip is actually stronger than it will be after I am born. My mom is gaining weight faster now than at any other phase of our pregnancy, but she is not the one putting on most of the weight, I am! Pray for my life, protect my life and defend my life. Lord my God, in you I take refuge, rescue me; save me from all who pursue me, Lest they maul me like lions, tear me to pieces with none to save. (Psalm 7:2-3)

THE ROMAN MISSAL, THIRD EDITION, The Homily

The homily is an integral part of the Mass, reserved to priest celebrant himself, or entrusted by him “to a concelebrating priest or occasionally, according to circumstances to a deacon, but never to a lay person.The homily may be an explanation of the Gospel, of the other Mass readings, or of the responsorial Psalm. It may call attention to other texts of the Mass or develop the feast or mystery being celebrated on a given day. The homily is “the Word in other words.” The homily is a bridge in two ways. It connects the first part of the Mass, the Liturgy of the Word, to the second part, the Liturgy of the Eucharist; and it connects the Mass to the rest of life. The homily sends God’s people, full of thanksgiving, into the Sacrifice of Christ renewed on the altar, and prepares them to go forth into a world hungry for goodness, beauty, and truth.

Hello Spiritual Friends, thirty weeks ago a new life started at conception – mine! God set wonderful things into motion and since that first moment until now, I have gained four pounds and grown close to 19 inches in total length. On a 3D ultra-sound you could watch me yawn, stretch, swallow and hiccup. At this stage in our pregnancy my mom needs to go to the doctor every two weeks. Just as you know not how the breath of life fashions thehuman frame in the mother’s womb, so you know not the work of God which he is accomplishing in the universe. (Ecclesiastes 11:5)

THE ROMAN MISSAL, THIRD EDITION, The Holy Gospel

The Holy Gospel is not the mere reading of a text; it is the presence of the risen Jesus in the midst of the Church. We listen to the Gospel standing, out of respect for Jesus. Before the Gospel, we make a sign of the cross three times: on the forehead, the lips, and the heart, praying that the Word of Christ fill our thoughts, bring praise to our lips, and inflame us with love. The Sunday Gospels roll on a three year cycle: Saint Matthew (Year A), Saint Mark (Year B), and Saint Luke (Year C).

AFRICA RELIEF: A drought and cholera in East Africa, complicated by political instability and violence in Somalia, has led to desperate conditions for millions of people. The Catholic Church is responding through Catholic Relief Services that has worked in that region for decades. WE VALUE THE GIFT OF LIFE TWENTY-NINE WEEKS AFTER CONCEPTION Hello Spiritual Friends, I was conceived 29 weeks ago and I am into my third trimester. I weigh about three and one-half pounds and am over 17 inches long. My central nervous system continues to develop and this is shown in many ways; for example, I have definite periods of rest and periods of activity. My mom is feeling pretty big now and has a hard time believing that we have 10 more weeks to go, but I will continue to grow! God is present as my helper, the Lord sustains my life. (Psalm 54:6)

MARRIAGE JUBILEE CELEBRATION: The annual Marriage Jubilee Mass to honor those couples in our Diocese who are observing significant wedding anniversaries will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Ogdensburg on Sunday, September 25 at 2:30 PM. Couples celebrating jubilees and wishing to attend and to receive a certificate need to register for this event through St. James Parish before September 13th.

THE ROMAN MISSAL, THIRD EDITION, The Responsorial Psalm

The Book of Psalms, also called the Psalter, is a collection of 150 poem-songs inspired by the Holy Spirit and entrusted to Israel in view of the day when Jesus would use them to express his own prayer to the Father. The Church sings the psalms and, like Christ, finds in them the expression of her own prayer. The text of the responsorial Psalm is given in the Lectionary. The Lector reads the verses of the responsorial Psalm signifying that the Psalm, like the reading that preceded it, is the Word of God addressed to his people as well as their prayer to him. During the responsorial psalm the congregation remains seated, listening with reverent attention and saying the response after each strophe. The responsorial Psalm is a meditation. The responsorial Psalm is the Word of God “taken to heart.”

THE ROMAN MISSAL, THIRD EDITION, The Offering

In each of the Eucharistic Prayers of the Roman Missal, offering follows remembrance. Christ is present and offered to the Father under the form of bread and wine. In communion with the Church in every place, the priest and faithful offer to the Father the sacrifice that “brings salvation to the whole world.” The offering of Christ cannot be separated from the offering of his members. In offering Christ, we learn to offer ourselves at Mass and in all the circumstances of life. There is room on the altar of Christ’s sacrifice for every joy,suffering, prayer and work of ours. The unity of the Church is forged in her one offering.

I weigh over 2 1/2 pounds and my total length is approximately 16 3/4 inches. I am getting chubbier and the extra baby fat helps to keep my body temperature regulated and provides me with stored energy. My eyes continue to develop and this week, the pupils of my eyes started to respond to light. Please pray that all people will embrace a culture of life. God did not make death, nor does he rejoice in the destruction of the living. (Wisdom 1:13)

THE ROMAN MISSAL, THIRD EDITION, The Liturgy of the Eucharist

The Mass is the Sacrifice of Christ and the Banquet of his Body and Blood. It is the mystery of Christ’s Cross and Resurrection made present in our “here and now,” the foretaste on earth of “what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9) at the heavenly “Supper of the Lamb” The Liturgy of the Eucharist unfolds in three movements: the Preparation of the Gifts, the Eucharistic Prayer, and the breaking of the Eucharistic Bread to be given in Holy Communion. The Mass thus corresponds precisely to the words and actions of Christ: “When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them” (Luke 24:30).

Dear Spiritual Friends, my life began at my conception 26 weeks ago. I have been viable for several weeks now and most recently I developed a sense of taste and smell. If you placed a sweet substance in my amniotic fluid, I would swallow more. However, if you put a bitter tasting substance in my amniotic fluid, I would swallow less. My facial expression shows my displeasure at bitter tasting things. Let those who seek my life be put to shame and disgrace. Let those who plot evil against me be turned back and confounded. THE FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION: Monday, August 15, is the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is not a holy day of obligation in the United States this year. Mass of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary will be offered at 8:30 AM.

The Bible Readings at Mass are from the Old and New Testaments and the Gospels. During this trimester, my brain will grow at an astounding rate! The weight of my brain will increase between 400 – 500%. My total height from head to toe is 15 1/4 inches and I weigh a little more than two pounds. My mother can feel me move when I am active and this helps us to bond with each other. The fruit of virtue is a tree of life, but violence takes lives away. (Proverbs 11:30)

THE ROMAN MISSAL, THIRD EDITION, The Kyrie Eleison

The Kyrie Eleison (Lord have mercy) is a litany addressed to the risen and ascended Jesus. Acclaiming him as both Lord and Christ, we implore his mercy. Though often prayed in English, the Kyrie Eleisonmay also be sung or recited in the original Greek, the only bit of Greek to have survived in our Mass of the Roman Rite. The Kyrie Eleison is a cherished reminder of the prayer of the Eastern Churches who in their liturgies ceaselessly call down the mercy of Christ. The Kyrie Eleison may be sung by the people responding to a cantor, or by the people responding to a choir. Over the centuries it has been clothed in every variety of musical vesture. Some of these melodies emerge from the depths of a great sorrow; others express a quiet repentance and hope; still others soar ecstatically in praise of Christ’s triumph over sin and death. “Lord, have mercy, Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.” A prayer for all times and places. Even the simplest chant can serve to fix it in the heart.

THE ROMAN MISSAL, THIRD EDITION, The Entrance

The Entrance Psalm or Chant is like a door opening onto the Mystery. It begins as the priest and other ministers enter the church with the people standing. The Entrance Chant sets the celebration of Mass in motion; it fosters unity; it expresses something of the feast or season being celebrated. The Entrance Chant accompanies the procession of the priest and ministers into the sanctuary and ends when the priest arrives at the chair. The choice of the Entrance Chant is determined by the General Instruction of the Roman Missal. It may be the antiphon and psalm given in one of three official liturgical books: the Roman Gradual, the Roman Missal, or the Simple Gradual. The Entrance Chant may also be an antiphon and psalm from another source, or even a suitable liturgical song. Apart from a very few exceptions, the Entrance Chants of the Mass are drawn from the Bible, usually from the Book of Psalms. It is significant that Mass opens with God’s word addressed to us. We stand at the Entrance Chant to welcome God who comes out to meet us.

MISSIONARY PROJECTS OF THE DIOCESE OF OGDENSBURG: The second collection today is for theMissionary Projects of the Diocese of Ogdensburg. The collection will be used to provide continued financial support of our former mission in Mollendo, Peru; and to help any other missionary projects throughout the world that the Diocese might deem appropriate as part of its evangelization effort. THE ROMAN MISSAL, THIRD EDITION, CHANT AND SACRED MUSIC:

The Church sings because she loves. All the liturgical traditions of the Church have developed forms of chant for the praise of God, the proclamation of the Word, and prayer. Chant is language clothed in the vesture of melody. Chant is born of the word; it elevates the spoken discourse and adapts it to the sacredness of the liturgy. In any Mass, the first things to be sung are the acclamations and simple dialogues. Priests are responsible for knowing how to sing the parts of the Mass that belong to them. To the people belong, first of all, the unchanging parts easily learned by heart and sung from memory. The Roman Liturgy gives pride of place to Gregorian Chant; other forms of song also have their place, provided that they express in melody the truth of the Mystery that is celebrated in the Liturgy. .Apart from the chants of the Mass itself, there is room for polyphony and other types of sacred music. The organ, an instrument capable of expressing everything from majestic jubilation to humble recollection, holds an esteemed place in our heritage.
