Bulletin for the Week of October 25, 2008

JOINING THE SAINTS: Halloween" is a name that means nothing by itself. It is a contraction of "All Hallows Eve," and it designates the vigil of All Hallows Day, more commonly known as All Saints Day celebrated on Saturday, November 1.. Many of the Halloween traditions had their origins in the All Saints/All Souls religious traditions of the Catholic Church. Some of them were part of the Celtic pagan tradition including lighting bonfires, carving pumpkins, and going from house to house, collecting treats. Being the eve of All Saints, parents might attempt to re-Christianize the Halloween celebration by making costumes of saints.

CATHOLIC CALENDARS: Calendars for 2009 indicating the special holy days and saints of the Catholic Church are available for your home or workplace. This year they are on the theme of Christian stewardship.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: “What torrents of grace have the saints drawn from the fountain of the Most Blessed Sacrament!” (St. Alphonsus Liguori). Adoration is held throughout the year every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 6 am to 9 pm at St. John’s Church Adoration Chapel, downstairs. Everyone is invited to spend some quiet time with Jesus anytime during these hours. For more information about spending a special hour with Jesus weekly, or becoming a substitute, please call 561-5083 or email us at Sjohnsadoration@aol.com

YEAR OF ST. PAUL: Each one of us is called by God to spread the Good News. St. Paul tells us, “Grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift.” Read St. Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians, chapter 4 verses 7-16 and discover what you are called to do and become. Sacred Scripture is a wonderful way to discover the truth. That is God’s plan for us and our world. St. Paul reminds us, ‘Living the truth in love, we should grow in every way into him who is the head, Christ.” Receive the Word and become models for others!

FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP: Our Catholic faith encourages us to develop the virtue of prudence, which enables us to discern our true good in every circumstance and to choose the right means of achieving it. Prudence shapes and informs our ability to deliberate over available alternatives, to determine what is most fitting to a specific context, and to act. Prudence must be accompanied by courage which calls us to act. As Catholics seek to advance the common good, we must carefully discern which public policies are morally sound. A good end does not justify an immoral means. At times Catholics may choose different ways to respond to social problems, but we cannot differ on our obligation to protect human life and dignity and help build through moral means a more just and peaceful world.

ALL SOULS ENVELOPES: In the Catholic Church the month of November is dedicated to the memory of members of our family, our parish and our community who have died. A way of remembering these persons is through sharing in a Mass for them. Envelopes for All Souls are available at the entrance to the church. With your offering indicate the names in whose memory you wish us to pray.

MARRIAGE TIP: Make a commitment to laugh at least once a day. No matter how hard life is, laughing with your spouse can lighten the load. Find more Marriage Rx at: www.foryourmarriage.org

PASTOR APPRECIATION: Please join us on October 26th to thank Father Deno for all he does for our parish. We are trying something a little different this year. Instead of the usual cider and donuts we will be serving a variety of home-made muffins, etc. "baked by our own good cooks" . We hope to see you at the Parish Center after the 10:00 a.m. Mass on the 26th. The Hospitality Committee, the Ladies of St. James

ST. JAMES ALTAR SERVERS: Altar servers represent those who assist at the altar in presenting the gifts of bread and wine to the priest. The custom goes back to the time when men assisted the rabbis at the seder meals, and then served Jesus as he prayed. We are very privileged at St. James Parish to have dedicated and excellent servers. I thank parents and families for making it possible for your daughters and sons to serve. We are in need of more altar servers who are in third grade through high school. At the entrance to the church are forms for boys and girls to apply to be altar servers. Training for serving will take place on Saturday November 8th at 10:30 at St. James Church.

Mission Intention for October
That this month dedicated to the Missions, every Christian community may feel the need to share in the Church’s universal mission with prayers, sacrifices, and material help.

A Child’s Point of View
Teacher: Now, Simon, tell me, do you say prayers before eating?
Simon: No sir, I don't have to. My Mom is a good cook.
Teacher: Winnie, name one important thing we have today that we didn't
have ten years ago.
Winnie: Me!
Teacher Maria, go to the map and find North America.
Maria: Here it is.
Teacher: Correct. Now class, who discovered America?
Class: Maria.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: Parents whose children are in grades 6, 7 and 8 are invited to meet with their child on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM at the St. James Parish regarding the religious education of their child.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: ““Visit the Blessed Sacrament often; there is your true life” (St. Paul of the Cross) Adoration is held throughout the year every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 6 am to 9 pm at St.

YEAR OF ST. PAUL: St. Paul experienced a conversion - was called by God - answered the call and became a powerful apostle by travelling throughout the ancient world spreading the Good News. How many times has God called you to spread the Good News? God wants each of us to know Sacred Scripture. That is where you find the Good News! St. Paul says “Our gospel did not come to you in word alone, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with much conviction.” Pray to the Holy Spirit so that you may read and know Sacred Scripture and shine like a light in the world.

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY: World Mission Sunday is a day set aside for Catholics world-wide to recommit themselves to the Church's missionary activity through prayer and sacrifice. Offerings from Catholics in the United States, on World Mission Sunday and throughout the year, are combined with offerings from Catholics around the globe and distributed to mission dioceses — about 1,100 at this time. Envelopes for this collection are in your packet of Sunday envelopes as well as at the entrance to the church.

FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP: Rights and Responsibilities
Every human being has a right to life, the fundamental right that makes all other rights possible. Each of us has a right to religious freedom, which enables us to live and act in accord with our God-given dignity, as well as a right to access to those things required for human decency—food and shelter, education and employment, health care and housing. Corresponding to these rights are duties and responsibilities—to one another, to our families, and to the larger society.

HURRICANE IKE RELIEF: Catholic Charities USA and the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston are providing humanitarian relief to many people whose lives were devastated by Hurricane Ike. They are also working to rebuild the Church where property was devastated by the storm. Bishop Robert Cunningham has appealed us to make generous contributions to be used in the recovery efforts. Contributions may be made through a check payable to our parish carrying a notation “Hurricane Ike Recovery.” Please place your check in the regular collection as soon as it is convenient. Thank you for your concern

MARRIAGE JUBILEE MASS: The annual Marriage Jubilee Mass to honor those couples in the Diocese of Ogdensburg who are observing significant wedding anniversaries will be held with Bishop Cunningham at St. Mary’s Cathedral at 2:30 PM on November 16th. All married couples are invited to come together with their families for this event. Couples celebrating jubilees and wishing to receive a certificate need to register for this event through their parish before November 1st. This event is co-sponsored by the St. Lawrence Society and the Family Life Office.

MARRIAGE TIP: Extroverts often talk in order to think; introverts need time to think before talking. If you're an extrovert and your spouse isn't, leave time for silence or agree that you'll both jot down thoughts before you start talking. Find more Marriage Rx at: www.foryourmarriage.org

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: “It is not necessary to go far to look for the Lord . . . . Let us draw near to Him!” (St. Teresa of Avila).

YEAR OF ST. PAUL: During this great Year of St. Paul we will discover how this great apostle traveled throughout the ancient world spreading the Word of God during very difficult times. In a world filled with violence, suffering and injustice, each one of us can make it a better world by seeking the truths we find in Sacred Scripture. St. Paul’s message today reminds us that no matter how much wealth we have, or how poor we are…humility is a great gift. St Paul says, God will fully supply whatever you need, in accord with his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. Find truth in the Bible. Let the God of peace be with you! Read the Bible daily.

MISSION SUNDAY: Each year, on World Mission Sunday, all baptized Catholics gather for Mass – in small chapels, as well as in large cathedrals around the globe – to celebrate our missionary vocation, and to offer prayers and sacrifices for the missionary task. Our celebration this year on October 19th takes on added significance as the Church here at home marks the 100th anniversary of our “mission independence.” In 1908, a papal decree removed the designation “mission territory” from the United States. Up until that time, we were the beneficiaries of the generosity of the Catholics of Europe through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. Today, more than 1,150 young churches of Asia, Africa, the Pacific Islands, and Latin America have these same needs. As we remember our own mission history on World Mission Sunday, we can offer our prayers and financial help for the young and growing churches of the Missions today. Your generosity through the Propagation of the Faith will reach those who await the “Good News” of Jesus, who long to experience His hope and love. The special collection for World Mission Sunday will be take next weekend.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION THANK YOU!!: Our Religious Education Program began on Thursday. While parents are the main religion teachers of their children which they promised to do on their wedding day, and specifically renewed this promise on the day they had their children baptized, they are assisted in their responsibilities through Catechists. The parents of St. James Parish are privileged this year to have 6 parishioners who have volunteered to be religion teachers. They are:
Grade 1 Carolyn LaPlante
Grade 2 Joan Herron
Grade 3 Robert Robare, Jr.
Grade 4 Sandra Jock
Grade 5 Patricia Delisle
Substitute Elsie Delaney
Parents whose children are in grades 6-8 will meet at St. James Parish Center on Sunday, October 19th for assistance and books for the home instruction of their children.

FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP: The consistent ethic of life provides a moral framework for principled Catholic engagement in political life and, rightly understood, neither treats all issues as morally equivalent nor reduces Catholic teaching to one or two issues. Catholic voters should use the framework of Catholic teaching to examine candidates’ positions on issues affecting human life and dignity as well as issues of justice and peace . As A Catholic Church we do not endorse or oppose candidates. Rather, we seek to form the consciences of Catholics so that they can examine the positions of candidates and make choices based on Catholic moral and social teaching.

Bulletin for the Week of October 4, 2008

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: “The Rosary, especially prayed in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, is a powerful means of spiritual grace. In all of our efforts to promote the sanctity of human life, prayer is our first and strongest resource” Adoration is held throughout the year every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 6 am to 9 pm at St.

RESPECT LIFE WEEKEND: This weekend is known as Respect Life Weekend. From abortion to assisted suicide, from the destruction of “spare embryos” to creating life simply to destroy it, our society has regressed to seeing human beings as faceless burdens or “things” to be used. The sanctity of human life and the right to life of every human person are being attacked through legislation that promotes destruction and degradation of human life. Our rights to religious beliefs is once again being undermined in the political arena. Jesus restored, healed and breathed new life into every person who sought his help. Such is the calling of every Catholic who wishes to follow the way of Jesus. Every human being is priceless in the eyes of God. Let us build a world where human life is always loved and defended, every form of violence banished.

27TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: Jesus' parable in today's Gospel reading from Matthew tells of a very generous vineyard owner who gave his tenants everything they would ever need to survive. And how did they repay him? By killing not only the servants who went to the field to help, but also the owner's son. Clearly, Jesus was again foretelling of God's gifts to us and our rejection of his love, of his early messengers, and the rejection of his Son. God so loved us that he would give us Jesus Christ; not even our rejection, however, staves off God's love. It is enduring, clear, and for all times. The Catholic Church teaches us that even in the face of the greatest moral evil the rejection, persecution and death of Christ God brought by his grace the greatest of goods: the glorification of Christ and our redemption. Throughout our lives, time and again we will suffer rejection and the pains of unrequited love. To be truly in communion with God, the love in our hearts for each other must never

VATICAN DIRECTIVE ON THE USE OF THE NAME OF GOD: The U.S. bishops’ Committee on Divine Worship recently announced a new directive from the Vatican regarding the use of the name of God in the sacred liturgy. Specifically, the word Yahweh may no longer be "used or pronounced" in songs and prayers during liturgical celebrations. The decision was based on long-standing Jewish and Christian traditions of not pronouncing the divine name wherever it occurs in the biblical text. You may notice some small changes to a few songs that are sung during Mass from what is printed in your missals. Unfortunately, at the time the directive was announced, the 2009 editions of these books had already been printed and, in many cases, shipped. The 2010 editions will include revised versions of the songs with updated texts. If you would like more information, please visit www.ocp.org/directive08.
