Bulletin for the Week of August 30, 2009

Mission Intention for September
That the word of God may be better known, welcomed and lived as the source of freedom and joy.

BISHOPS FUND APPEAL: The 2009 Bishop’s Fund Appeal is set to begin in our parish and throughout the Diocese of Ogdensburg. The Appeal provides us the opportunity to share our blessings with others as we continually serve those who need our help the most throughout our community.
Our goal is to have 111 or more families in our parish participating in the Bishop’s Fund Appeal. If we do this, we will surely exceed our parish financial target of $ 7223. Last year 103 families generously contributed $7829. Please pray for the success of the Appeal in our parish and across the Diocese.

FUNERAL: A funeral was celebrated this week for Rosemarie Coryer. Please remember her and her family in your prayers.

A FUN FILLED LABOR DAY: Celebrate Labor Day, Monday, September 7th at Holy Name Church grounds, AuSable Forks. Parade starts at 10:00. Food and games continue 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM.

CRAFT SHOW: The Ladies of St. Ann, Mooers Forks will have a Craft Show and Bake Sale on Saturday, October 17 at the St. Joseph Parish Center, 73 Maple Street, Mooers 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM. Crafters interested in renting a space can phone Marge Pombrio at 236-4577.

MARRIAGE JUBILEE: The Diocese has announced that they will hold the annual Marriage Jubilee mass this year on September 20th at 2:30 pm at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Ogdensburg. This event is a wonderful opportunity for those couples who are newly married to come together and celebrate with couples who have truly lived the sacrament of marriage. All couples are welcome. Couples celebrating jubilees and wishing to receive a certificate need to register for this event through the parish before September 8th.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: God in His omnipotence could not give more, in His wisdom knew not how to give more, in His riches had not more to give than the Eucharist. (St. Augustine). Eucharistic Adoration is held throughout the year every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 6 am to 9 pm at St. John’s Church Adoration Chapel, downstairs. Everyone is invited to spend some quiet time with Jesus anytime during these hours. For more information about spending a special hour with Jesus weekly, or becoming a substitute, please call 561-5083 or email us atSjohnsadoration@aol.com

MARRIAGE TIP: Over the long term, it is important for marriage partners to have accurate knowledge of their relationship's strength and weaknesses. Satisfaction goes down when a spouse's expectations don't fit with reality. Tell your spouse one strength of your marriage today.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION: Registration forms for the 2009-2010 Religious Education school year are available at the entrance to the Church. The Religious Education Program for Grades 1-5 will be held on Thursdays whenever the Saranac Central School is in session. The first class will be Thursday, October 8th. Parents are requested to pick up a form for each child in Grades 1-5. Complete the form and place it in the box designated for this purpose at the entrance to the Church. Include with each form a book fee of $20. St. James Religious Education is for St. James parishioners only. The completed registration form and book fee must be returned no later than Sunday, September 20th in order to be included in the program.

Grades 6-7 are part of the Saranac Middle School. Due to the later closing time of the school day, students in Grades 6-7 cannot meet on Thursdays. Parents whose children are in these grades and who participated in the St. James Religious Education Program in previous years will receive written information from Father Deno regarding the religious education of your children. Students in Grade 8-12 who have not yet been confirmed will participate in a two year Religious Education-Confirmation Preparation program to be held monthly on Sunday evenings at St. James Parish Center starting October 11th

SUMMER ENVELOPES: We sincerely thank our parishioners who mail or deliver their weekly envelopes to the parish when they are out-of-town. As many of you understand, our parish expenses and obligations do not take a vacation when you do, so it is very helpful as you continue your support even when you cannot personally attend Mass here.

ONLY TODAY:
My life is an instant,
An hour which passes by;
My life is a moment
Which I have no power to stay.
You know, O my God,
That to love you here on earth --
I have only today.
St. Therese of Lisieux

VOCATIONS: Catholics believe that God calls each individual to one of three vocations: either to marriage, to religious life (priest, nun), or to remain single. In 2009 those who believed that God called them to prepare to become a priest showed a diversity in ethnicity, age, and life experiences as follows:
21 percent are Hispanic,
14 percent are Asian or Pacific Islander,
6 percent are African/African American,
43 percent are under 30
70 percent entered with a bachelor’s degree
90 percent held full-time jobs
7 percent have been married
5 percent have children
73 percent attended Catholic schools for at least part of their education
68 percent considered a religious vocation before age 21

A PRAYER FOR JOB SEEKERS: Gracious and loving God, you know our need for meaningful work. Send your Holy Spirit to guide those who are searching for employment. Help them to recognize the gifts and talents you have given them. Deepen their desire to follow your will. Inspire them as they contact potential employers. Give them patience as they wait for responses. Shelter them from feelings of rejection. Protect them from discouragement. Give them courage to overcome fear. Shower on them the graces they need to persevere. Let this time of searching become an opportunity to grow in faith, to cultivate the virtue of hope, and to experience your healing love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR PEACE AMONG NATIONS: On July 25,1945 President Harry Truman made the decision to drop the newly developed atomic bomb on cities in Japan. In the early morning hours of August 6, 1945, a B-29 bomber named Enola Gay dropped a uranium bomb over the city of Hiroshima, Japan with a civilian population of 300,000. Those closest to the explosion died instantly, their bodies turned to black char. 70,000 people died as a result of initial blast, 200,000 as the result of radioactive fallout. This was followed three days later on August 9, 1945 when a B-29 bomber named Bock’s Car dropped a plutonium bomb over Nagasaki killing 40,000 persons instantly with 70,000 as the result of radioactive fallout. For many decades the Catholic Church has supported a nuclear-weapons-free world. Nuclear war-fighting is rejected because it cannot ensure non-combatant immunity and the likely destruction and lingering radiation.
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love,
Where there is injury, pardon
Where there is doubt, faith,
Where there is despair, hope,
Where there is darkness, light,
Where there is sadness, joy.
