PRAYER FOR FAMILIES
In good times and in bad,
in sickness and in health,
we belong to each other
as we belong to you, God ever faithful.
By morning and by night
may your name be on our lips,
a blessing to all our days:
so may kindness and patience be ever among
us, a hunger for justice,
and songs of thankfulness in all we do.
May the Lord Jesus,
who lived with his holy family in Nazareth,
dwell also with our family,
and keep us from all evil,
and make all of us in one heart and mind.
Amen.

HOLY FAMILY SUNDAY: St. Joseph doesn’t get much space in
the New Testament. Joseph protected Jesus from King Herod. The king was worried when he heard that a child had been born who would be the king of the Jews. He asked the wise men to search for this child in Bethlehem and then come back to report to him. He told the wise men he wanted to pay homage to the new king. But the wise men were warned in a dream not to go back to Herod. Fearing a new king, Herod sent soldiers to kill all the male children in Bethlehem who were two years old or younger. Joseph, warned by an angel, fled with his family to Egypt to escape Herod’s plot. There they lived until King Herod died, when Joseph could safely move the family back to Nazareth.

MARRIAGE TIP:
Have a tough decision to make? There are two extremes to avoid. Rationalization means you play loose with the truth and talk yourself into doing what you always wanted to do anyway. Scrupulosity involves following the letter of the law more than the spirit. Seek the golden mean. Find more Marriage Rx atwww.foryourmarriage.org.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! This is the first Sunday of the new Church year. It’s also the first Sunday of the Church season of Advent. The color of the season is violet to show we’re in a time of quiet preparation for the coming of the Messiah. During Advent we hear John the Baptist telling us to repent, to change our lives for the better, and to make straight the way of the Lord.
For those of you who follow the Bible readings of the Church, our new church year (November 28,2010 to November 27, 2011) will be known as Year A.

Portions or all of the Bible have been translated into 2,233 of the more than 6,500 languages in the world. Some part of the Bible is being translated for the first time in 468 languages. In many of the rest, where older Bible versions already exist, new translations are being prepared in clear, modern language that is easily understandable to today's readers. THANKSGIVING DAY: Thanksgiving is not a feast of the Catholic Church, but the Church does provide a “Mass in Thanksgiving to God” to be celebrated on this day. The first official Thanksgiving proclamation was made by the Continental Congress in 1777, but it was not until 1863 that Thanksgiving became a national holiday. President Abraham Lincoln called for the nation to observe a day of thanksgiving on the last Thursday of November.

CCHD/Black and Indian Missions: The second collection this weekend will be for the Campaign for Human Development. Let us offer generous financial help in support of the service of priests, Religious and lay catechists in more than 1,150 Catholic parishes throughout Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands and remote regions of Latin America. This current Church year ends with next weekend’s special day in honor of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King. PLANNING FOR DEATH IS NATURAL: Planning for death is as natural for the Christian as planning for life. As stated in 1 Timothy 5:8, if anyone does not take care of his own, and especially of his household; he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. Having a Will is good Stewardship. Take care of your family.

VISITING A CEMETERY DURING MONTH OF NOVEMBER: The custom of visiting the cemetery and praying for the dead can be traced to the women who returned to the tomb of Jesus Easter morning to mourn and complete the preparation of His body for burial. Then and there they discovered that He had been raised from the dead. Today, our visits to the cemetery are prompted by our love and faith. We come to remember, to mourn, to give thanks for the life our beloved shared with us, to pray for peaceful rest in death, and to strengthen our belief that one day we will be united with our beloved in Eternal Life.

PRAYER FOR VISITING THE CEMETERY
We come to this sacred place, the earthly home of our departed loved ones, where they rest in peace.

We come to this sacred place to be close to God and remember the love He has for us.

We come to this sacred place to pray for the eternal repose of their souls.

We come to this sacred place in prayer, asking for the intercession of those who are before the throne of God.

We come to this sacred place and are reminded that God is present, for always and forever.

We come to this sacred place as so many have come before us and will continue after us, as a member of God's family.

IN MEMORY OF OUR DEPARTED FAMILY: The Catholic Church invites us in the month of November to remember all those who have died. Death is the end of our earthly journey. We are told by Jesus, however, that when we have finished the work given to us to do on earth, we will be taken to an everlasting life in heaven. The Church encourages us to prepare ourselves for that hour of death by prayer and by living out our faith the best we can. Mary, our Blessed Mother, gave us her prayer, the Hail Mary, in which she mentions she will be with us at the hour of death. Let us pray daily to her and to St. Joseph, the Patron Saint of a happy death, to free us from any fear of death. During this month let us remember especially those who were called by death to their everlasting life since last November including those whose funeral and/or burial was in this parish.

MARRIAGE TIP: Sometimes the main difference between a happy marriage and a troubled one is preserving an attitude of “goodwill” when one makes a mistake. How does one build goodwill? By constantly looking for the good rather than the fault and creating a “bank account” of positive experiences. Find more Marriage Rx at www.foryourmarriage.org.
