The price for a year’s subscription to the paper is $27 for Catholics within the Diocese of Ogdensburg. Support for the Catholic Press in the North Country through patron subscriptions at $35, $50, $100 and $250 allows the newspaper to maintain an affordable subscription rate for all. Subscribing to the North Country Catholic is an ideal way to observe this Year of Faith, to be informed and inspired and to stay connected with the 94,000 members of our diocesan family. Please enter your subscription today. Extra subscription envelopes are available at the entrances of the church. ANOTHER OPTION – “go green” and receive your NCC through email. If interested, write your email address on the envelope . THE SIGN OF THE CROSS: For early Christians, the Sign of the Cross involved tracing small crosses on the forehead, on the lips and on the heart, as we do at Mass before the reading of the Gospel. In the 3rd century,Tertullian noted that Christians made the Sign of the Cross regularly before entering or leaving their homes, eating, bathing, even before lighting lamps. The Sign of the Cross is made on Catholics at Baptism, at the Anointing of the Sick and countless times in between. When you reverently bless yourself with the Sign of the Cross, you express belief in God the Father, in God the Son and in God the Holy Spirit from whom all blessings flow. We can sanctify modern life with this ancient gesture. EASTER DUTY: All Catholics who have reached the age of reason must confess their serious sins in the Sacrament of Penance at least once a year. They must also receive Holy Communion at least once each year during the Easter season, which this year extends from February 21st, the First Sunday of Lent, until Trinity Sunday, May 30th. CONFESSION: The web site of the American Bishops (www.usccb.org) has an excellent presentation on the Sacrament of Penance. It contains directions for receiving the sacrament of Penance and an examination of conscience. It explains the parts of Confession. Although this sacrament is often referred to as “confession” it is much more. We first feel contrition in our hearts, a sorrow for our sin and determination not to sin again, then we confess our sins to a priest. After our confession and an Act of Contrition, we receive absolution of our sins and a penance to repair the damage of sin and protect us from sinning again in the future

As this date approached, a young woman sent a letter assuring her suitor that if he could be content with her small dowry, “I would be the merriest maiden on the ground, a good, true and loving Valentine.” Ever since, similar hopes have been in the minds and on the lips of countless lovers. CHURCH IN CENTRAL AMERICA: Next week we will take up the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. This Collection supports Catholic organizations that provide food, shelter, medical care, catechesis, and companionship for the lonely in a region still struggling in the aftermath of atheistic Soviet rule. Your donations help to restore the strength of the Church in the region. Visit www.usccb.org/nationalcollections to learn more. Look for an opportunity today to lighten your beloved’s life with a touch of humor. Poke fun at yourself, or exaggerate a frustrating situation to the point of levity Find more Marriage Rx at www.foryourmarriage.org Lenten Regulations 2013 LENT this year begins on with Ash Wednesday, February 21. Lent is the holiest season of the year for Christians, especially Catholics. There are certain sacrifices we make and certain traditions that we observe: ABSTINENCE: All Catholics who have reached their 14th birthday are bound to abstain totally from meat on the following days: Ash Wednesday (February 13), all Fridays of Lent and Good Friday (March 29th). FASTING: All Catholics between the ages of 19 and 59 are bound also to observe the Law of Fast on the following days: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting, that is, eating less, involves limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. But together, they should not equal a full meal. Lighter nourishment may be taken on two other occasions during the course of the day. EASTER DUTY: All Catholics, after they have made their first Holy Communion, must confess their sins in the Sacrament of Confession at least once a year. They must also receive Holy Communion at least once each year during the Easter season, which this year extends from Februar 17, the First Sunday of Lent, until Trinity Sunday, May 26.. PENANCE: The entire season of Lent should be observed in a spirit of prayer and penance. Spending extra time in prayer or Bible study, attending daily Mass, making the Stations of the Cross in St. James Church on Fridays of Lent at 6:30 pm, voluntary sacrifice and self-denial, combined with works of charity and service to others, are all excellent ways to obey the Lord’s command to reform our lives and to prepare for the joyful celebration of Easter.

HEALING MASS AND WORKSHOP: Internationally known healer & speaker, Fr. Richard McAlear, OMI will be at St. Peter’s Church for a special healing Mass on Friday, Feb. 8th @ 6:30 pm and Sat., Feb 9th from 1-2:30 pm for a Healing & Forgiveness Workshop/Holy Hour. All are welcome. Contact person for the events is Eve McGill: evemcgill@charter.net or 563-0001. GESTURES IN WORSHIP: Since the earliest days of the Church, gestures have been an important part of worship. Some gestures are positions for praying. Genuflecting was originally used in the presence of rulers. We genuflect in front of the tabernacle as a sign of reverence for the Blessed Sacrament. It is not enough to reach for love unless you care enough to give it. Bishop Wadhams General Assembly # 706: The Bishop Wadhams General Assembly # 706 in Plattsburgh has rescheduled their chicken and biscuit dinner for February 10. Wonderful as marriage can be, it’s not always lived on an emotional high. Some days, we must just decide to love. The feelings will eventually follow. Find more Marriage Rx at www.foryourmarriage.org COMMUNION TO THE SICK: The Second Vatican Council,in its Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, speaks of the Holy Eucharist as the source and summit of our spiritual life. This means the Holy Eucharist is the source from which all other blessings flow. Please advise Father Deno of homebound persons who would like to have Holy Communion brought to them at their LENT 2103; The Holy Season of Lent 2013 begins on Wednesday, February 13th. It is a time each year for us to turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel and living our Catholic life. When we open our minds and hearts to God’s reconciling love, all that holds us back from encountering Jesus in an intimate, life-altering way melts away. Our efforts to re-vitalize and strengthen our faith must begin with an acknowledgement that sometimes our words and deeds rupture our relationship with the Lord and one another. We are in need of healing and reconciliation. So, we examine our consciences and admit our failings, knowing that Jesus’ merciful love continually welcomes us into His warm embrace. In the next week you will a variety of difficult activities to help to make Lent 2013 the best you have ever made. Among these includes Mass, Stations of Cross, Confession. Though the assistance of the Knights of Columbus Council 6067 a variety of books and booklets will be available to you. As in past years the Lenten 2013 copy of MAGNIFCAT and leaflets on Lent, on Holy Week and on the Year of Faith will be available. All effective efforts at change begin with a desire to change. These items provide yo particulars on how to carry these out.
