Bulletin for the Week of January 25, 2009

Mission Intention for January
That the family may become more and more a place of training in charity, personal growth and the transmission of the faith.

FUNERAL: A funeral was celebrated this week for Edward Sullivan. Please remember him and his family in your prayers.

Diary of an Unborn Child
Day 1 Fertilization! All human chromosomes are present
and a unique human life begins.
Day 22 The baby’s heart begins to beat with the child’s own
blood — often a different blood type than the mother.
Week 6 At this stage, brain waves can be detected. The child’s
mouth and lips are present and fingers are forming.
Week 8 At this stage, every organ is in place. Bones and
unique fingerprints begin to form.
Week 17 The baby can now have dream (REM) sleep.

Abortion Statistics: Not Just Numbers . . .
Since 1973 there have been more than 43 million abortions.
The annual number of abortions has nearly doubled since Roe v. Wade, from 744,6000 to 1,313,300 for 2000.
For every 1000 live births, there are 306 abortions.

There are more than 140,000 second and third trimester abortions each year.
After reaching a high of over 1.6 million in 1990, the number of abortions annually performed in the United States has begun to drop back to levels not seen since the late 1970s. Thanks to the efforts of grassroots pro-life activists, more and more Americans have learned that abortion is not about a blob of tissue, and that these children are more than just statistics. Pro-life education has taught America that Abortion Stops a Beating Heart.

RESPECT LIFE COLLECTION: The Respect Life Collection supports a variety of pro-life initiatives in the Diocese of Ogdensburg. Last year there were nineteen grant recipients. With looming legislation – The Freedom of Information Act (FOCA) on the national level and the Reproductive Health and Privacy Protection Act (RHAPP) at the state level, it is imperative that we increase our pro-life efforts to protect the most vulnerable of those among us. If FOCA and RHAPP become laws they will jeopardize 35 years of pro-life advances.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: He who receives the Most Holy Communion receives the living Jesus Christ, whose body, soul and divinity are in this divine Sacrament...Let us clearly see in spirit the holy angels who surround the Most Holy Sacrament to adore it. (St. Francis de Sales). Eucharistic Adoration is held throughout the year every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 6 am to 9 pm at St. John’s Church Adoration Chapel, downstairs. Everyone is invited to spend some quiet time with Jesus anytime during these hours. For more information about spending a special hour with Jesus weekly, or becoming a substitute, please call 561-5083 or email us at Sjohnsadoration@aol.com

MARRIAGE TIP: Moral decisions in marriage often involve how we use our time and money. Does this job demand too many hours away from home? How many children should we have? Decide prayerfully and together. Find more Marriage Rx at:www.foryourmarriage.org

MARK’S GOSPEL: The shortest and earliest of the four Gospels in the Bible is the Gospel of Mark. It provides a fast paced story of the events of Jesus’ public life. The Gospel dates from around 70 AD, nearly four decades after Jesus’ death. It has no story of the birth of Jesus and no account of the resurrection. It is filled with so much imagery and suffering, that it is often difficult for us to hear it. The Feast of St. Mark is celebrated on April 25, and Christian art often portrays Mark with a lion by his side.

Mission Intention for January
That the family may become more and more a place of training in charity, personal growth and the transmission of the faith.

A PRAYER FOR THE PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURATION
Almighty and eternal God, you have revealed your glory to all nations. God of power and might, wisdom and justice, through you authority is rightly administered, laws are enacted, and judgement is decreed.
Assist with your spirit of counsel and fortitude the President of these United States, that his administration may be conducted in righteousness, and be eminently useful to your people over whom he presides.
May he encourage due respect for virtue and religion. May he execute the laws with justice and mercy. May he seek to restrain crime, vice, and immorality. Amen

SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: Some people spend their entire lives trying to "find themselves" or "find the meaning of life." Sadly, some find neither. Two of John the Baptist's followers were with him when Jesus walked by one day. "Behold, the Lamb of God," John said to them. Immediately, they wanted to be with him. Andrew introduced his brother Simon to Jesus. In this short period of time, these men found the meaning of life and themselves. By praying daily and reading the word of God, we strengthen our families and further our ability to spread the Gospel of the Lord, just as those called to Jesus' other family were able to do when they found what they were looking for.

RESPECT LIFE COLLECTION: The Respect Life Collection supports a variety of pro-life initiatives. Last year there were nineteen grant recipients. The collection provided support for:
Gabriel Project crisis-pregnancy programs in: Gouverneur, Potsdam, Brasher Falls, Massena, and Plattsburgh
The Catholic Charities Pregnant and Parenting Teen Program in Malone
Pro-Life radio, television and billboard messages in Watertown, Plattsburgh, and Lewis County
Pro-Life Fair Booths at the Clinton County and Lewis County fairs
A two-day presentation in Watertown by the founder of Elizabeth Ministry, an outreach to young families who do not have family support.
Envelopes for the Respect Life Collection are your box of envelopes. It will take place on June 24-25.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: If people spent one hour per week in Eucharistic Adoration, abortion would be ended. (Bl. Mother Teresa of Calcutta).

MARRIAGE TIP: If you must boast, boast about your spouse. It's a real boost to hear your spouse say something nice about you in front of friends. Find more Marriage Rx at:www.foryourmarriage.org

FUNERAL: A funeral was celebrated this week for Clarence Delaney. Please remember him and his family in your prayers.

WHY DID JESUS ASK TO BE BAPTIZED? Neither John the Baptist nor Jesus invented baptism. It had been practiced for centuries among the Jews as a ritual equivalent of Confession. Until the fall of the Temple in 72 A.D. it was common for Jewish people to make a spiritual cleansing in a special pool called a MIKVEH--literally a "collection of water". This was said to remove spiritual impurity and sin. Men did this weekly on the eve of the Sabbath. Women did it monthly. Converts were also expected to do it before entering Judaism. Orthodox Jews still retain the rite. Jesus transformed this continual ritual into the one single, definitive act by which we begin our faith. In effect he fused his divine essence with the water and the ceremony.

BAPTISM SPONSORS: Sponsors for Baptism are to be at least 16 years of age, have received Holy Communion and Confirmation, and practice their Catholic faith. A baptized person who belongs to a non-Catholic ecclesial community may be admitted in the company of a Catholic sponsor, serving as a Christian witness.

THE SIGN OF THE CROSS: For early Christians, the Sign of the Cross involved tracing small crosses on the forehead, on the lips and on the heart, as we do at Mass before the reading of the Gospel. In the 3rd century,Tertullian noted that Christians made the Sign of the Cross regularly before entering or leaving their homes, eating, bathing, even before lighting lamps. The Sign of the Cross is made on Catholics at Baptism, at the Anointing of the Sick and countless times in between. When you reverently bless yourself with the Sign of the Cross, you express belief in God the Father, in God the Son and in God the Holy Spirit from whom all blessings flow. We can sanctify modern life with this ancient gesture.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION:“I am very grateful because Eucharistic Adoration is being increasingly renewed . . . and how, precisely in this way, new vocations are also born” (Pope Benedict XVI, Feb. 22, 2007). Eucharistic Adoration is held throughout the year every

Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 6 am to 9 pm at St.

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY: We are celebrating 101 years of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity January 18-25. That they may become one in your hand (Ezekiel 37:15-19, 22-24a) is the theme for the week. Begun in 1908, these days have been set aside each year so that Christians the world over may share the prayer of Jesus That they may all be one as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me (John 17:21). Promoting Christian unity is an ecumenical movement among Christians to pray for unity among all Christians. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity started with an eight-day liturgical prayer in 1908 at Graymoor, Garrison, New York, with a small group of Franciscans in the Episcopal Church. Prayers for each day of the Octave can be found on http://www.geii.org Let us continue to pray for Christian Unity so that one day “all will be one”.

EPIPHANY OF THE LORD: On this first Lord’s Day of the new year we come together in joy to celebrate the festival of the Epiphany of the Lord. Today is the high point of the Christmas season and one of the greatest days of the year. A shining star in the heavens proclaims the good news that Jesus Christ is the new-born Saviour. You will notice that the Bible readings overflow with superlatives.

PRAYER OF BLESSING OF THE HOME AT EPIPHANY
Lord our God, bless this household.
May we be blessed with health, goodness of
heart, gentleness, and the keeping of your law.
We give thanks to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen
