Making a wreath is easy. On a wreath of evergreens space four purple candles. A fifth white candle may be placed in the center of the wreath. Each day of the first week of Advent light just one candle, recite as a family a short prayer, and then snuff out the candle. Repeat the same each week of Advent lighting an extra candle each week. The white candle can be lighted on Christmas day.

THE FINAL PURIFICATION OR PURGATORY: All who die in God’s grace and friendship are assured of eternal salvation. After our death the Church teaches that may need to undergo purification which is known as PURGATORY. Those in Purgatory will definitely go to heaven, but not just yet. From the time of Jesus Catholics have honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers and Masses for them. This is mentioned in the Book of Maccabees (12:43-46). The belief is that if the dead were in hell, no prayers could help them, and if they were in heaven, they wouldn’t need any prayers. Catholics do not see Purgatory as a place of pain and torment. November has traditionally been the month when we think more deeply of those who have died.
