Mission Intention for January
That the family may become more and more a place of training in charity, personal growth and the transmission of the faith.
CATHOLIC CALENDARS: Calendars for 2009 indicating the special holy days and saints of the Catholic Church are available for your home or workplace. This year they are on the theme of Christian stewardship.
HOLY FAMILY SUNDAY: Every family is called to be a “holy family” … to hear and to follow the Lord, to be a sign of Christ’s love for His church. Celebrate the Feast Day of the Holy Family with your family and with our parish family.
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: May the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus make our hearts meek and humble like His and help us to carry out our family duties in a holy way. (Bl. Mother Teresa of Calcutta) Eucharistic Adoration is held throughout the year every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 6 am to 9 pm at St. John’s Church Adoration Chapel, downstairs. Everyone is invited to spend some quiet time with Jesus anytime during these hours. For more information about spending a special hour with Jesus weekly, or becoming a substitute, please call 561-5083 or email us at Sjohnsadoration@aol.com
MARRIAGE TIP: Have a tough decision to make? Avoid the two extremes of rationalization (talk yourself into doing what you wanted to do anyway) and scrupulosity (following the letter rather than the spirit of the law). Pray and seek the golden mean. Find more Marriage Rx at:www.foryourmarriage.org
A NEW YEAR’S BLESSING:
Heavenly Father, in this time of new beginnings,
we recall how the heavens celebrated the birth of Christ.
We think back to the new kingdom he proclaimed,
and remember the new life we gained in our baptism.
In this time of new beginnings,
and at the beginning of this New Year,
may we always act as good examples
of the new life in you that all Christians have
and be the same for others.
Give us the joy that is ours
as adopted members of God's family. AMEN
CHRISTMAS COLLECTION: Thank you for your generous gift in our Christmas collection. Like every North Country parish, we forward 60% of the collection plus $500 per priest to the diocese to fund pensions for retired priests. Pension needs for the future as well as obligation for the next year are being met thanks to your generous donation.
2009 SUNDAY OFFERING ENVELOPES: Please pick up your box of 2009 Sunday offering envelopes placed in the entryway to the church. Please begin using them on January 1st. If you would like a box of envelopes, simply pick up a box and place your name and address on the first envelope. As always, thank you for your generosity that allows our parish to continue its mission.
THANK YOU FROM FATHER DENO: I am humbled by the amount of cards, words of gratitude, prayers, good wishes, and treats that came into the rectory over the last week. I am very blessed to be able to serve this parish. I thank you for your kindness throughout the whole year.
STATEMENT OF GIVING FOR INCOME TAXES: If you wish to receive a statement of your financial contributions to St. James Church for 2008, please indicate this on your Sunday offering envelope so that we can assure confidentiality. Your statement will not include your gift to the Bishops Fund.

Almighty God and Father.
by the mystery of the cross, you have made us strong;

now freed from the bonds of mortality,
and count them among your saints in heaven.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome: “You are God’s building. Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? Of course you do. There are many times that we see the providence of God working within us at every moment in our lives. We can be confident that the promises of God are fulfilled in us because the Spirit of God dwells in us. In our prayer this week, may our lives be focused on the indwelling presence of God within us so that we can bring to the world a hope that can only be found in God.
ECUMENICAL THANKSGIVING SERVICE:
An Ecumenical Thanksgiving Prayer service will be held at St. Joseph’s Church, West Chazy, on Sunday November 23rd at 3:30 PM. Everyone is welcomed to attend.
THE FINAL PURIFICATION OR PURGATORY:
All who die in God’s grace and friendship are assured of eternal salvation. After our death the Church teaches that we will undergo purification which is known as PURGATORY. This doctrine was given at the Council of Trent (1563) and then reaffirmed at the Vatican Council II (1965) and made part of The Catechism of the Catholic Church (1992). From the time of Jesus Catholics have honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers and Masses for them.
SILENT AUCTION:
Seton Catholic & Seton Academy are collecting items for a Silent Auction on December 14th from Noon – 5 PM at our annual Christmas Dinner at Seton Catholic. We kindly request your help with the donation of any gift certificates or new items (minimum value $20) we’ll offer for sale. Items can be dropped off at either school, given to a current Seton family, or by emailing Sharon Zalis (info@fleetpromo.com) to make arrangements for pick up. All proceeds directly benefit our schools. We appreciate the support of all parish communities that help provide for Catholic Education in the North County.
MARRIAGE TIP:
How's your memory? I'm not as likely to remember a vague or optional request my husband makes if I never wanted to do it anyway. Are there things you conveniently forgot? Don't argue, just apologize. Find more Marriage Rx at: www.foryourmarriage.org
CHRISTMAS FLOWERS COLLECTION:
As in the past you will find envelopes at the entrance of the church for donations for Christmas flowers and decorations. Place the envelopes with your contribution in the collection basket. Your generous contribution is very much appreciated.

FUND RAISER: The Witkiewicz family lost their home to fire on October 22. A spaghetti dinner will be held on Saturday, November 8, noon to 6 PM at St. Joseph Church Hall, Dannemora to assist them.
CATHOLIC CALENDARS: Calendars for 2009 indicating the special holy days and saints of the Catholic Church are available for your home or workplace. This year they are on the theme of Christian stewardship.
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: “The Saints found no greater delight in this world than to be in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament” (Fr. Lukas Etlin, OSB.). Eucharistic Adoration is held throughout the year every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 6 am to 9 pm at St.
YEAR OF ST. PAUL: All Saints Day “I heard the number of those who had been marked with the seal, one hundred and forty-four thousand marked from every tribe of the children of Israel”(Revelation 7:4). As we celebrate All Saints Day, these 144 thousand are the saints who have entered into the presence of Christ, experiencing His light and peace. These saints are like a “little light” that help us to know the love of God through the witness of their lives in Christ that reflected His love while upon this earth.
ALL SOULS ENVELOPES: In the Catholic Church the month of November is dedicated to the memory of members of our family, our parish and our community who have died. A way of remembering these persons is through sharing in a Mass for them. Envelopes for All Souls are available at the entrance to the church. With your offering indicate the names in whose memory you wish us to pray.
MARRIAGE TIP: The main difference between a happy marriage and a troubled one can be preserving an attitude of "goodwill" when one makes a mistake. Constantly look for the good rather than the fault and create a "bank account" of positive experiences. Find more Marriage Rx at: www.foryourmarriage.org
ST. JAMES ALTAR SERVERS: Altar servers represent those who assist at the altar in presenting the gifts of bread and wine to the priest. We are very privileged at St. James Parish to have dedicated and excellent servers. We are in need of more altar servers who are in third grade through high school. At the entrance to the church are forms for boys and girls to apply to be altar servers. Training for serving will take place on Saturday, November 8th at 10:30 at St. James Church.
IN MEMORY OF OUR DEPARTED FAMILY: The Catholic Church invites us in the month of November to remember all those who have died. Death is the end of our earthly journey. We are told by Jesus, however, that when we have finished the work given to us to do on earth, we will be taken to an everlasting life in heaven. The Church encourages us to prepare ourselves for that hour of death by prayer and by living out our faith the best we can. Mary, our Blessed Mother, gave us her prayer, the Hail Mary, in which she mentions she will be with us at the hour of death. Let us pray daily to her and to St. Joseph, the Patron Saint of a happy death, to free us from any fear of death. During this month let us remember especially those who were called by death to their everlasting life since last November and whose funeral and/or burial was in this parish.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: “What torrents of grace have the saints drawn from the fountain of the Most Blessed Sacrament!” (St. Alphonsus Liguori). Adoration is held throughout the year every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 6 am to 9 pm at St. John’s Church Adoration Chapel, downstairs. YEAR OF ST. PAUL: Each one of us is called by God to spread the Good News. St. Paul tells us, “Grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift.” Read St. Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians, chapter 4 verses 7-16 and discover what you are called to do and become. Sacred Scripture is a wonderful way to discover the truth. That is God’s plan for us and our world. St. Paul reminds us, ‘Living the truth in love, we should grow in every way into him who is the head, Christ.” Receive the Word and become models for others!
FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP: Our Catholic faith encourages us to develop the virtue of prudence, which enables us to discern our true good in every circumstance and to choose the right means of achieving it. Prudence shapes and informs our ability to deliberate over available alternatives, to determine what is most fitting to a specific context, and to act. Prudence must be accompanied by courage which calls us to act. As Catholics seek to advance the common good, we must carefully discern which public policies are morally sound. A good end does not justify an immoral means. At times Catholics may choose different ways to respond to social problems, but we cannot differ on our obligation to protect human life and dignity and help build through moral means a more just and peaceful world.
ALL SOULS ENVELOPES: In the Catholic Church the month of November is dedicated to the memory of members of our family, our parish and our community who have died. A way of remembering these persons is through sharing in a Mass for them. Envelopes for All Souls are available at the entrance to the church. MARRIAGE TIP: Make a commitment to laugh at least once a day. No matter how hard life is, laughing with your spouse can lighten the load. Find more Marriage Rx at: www.foryourmarriage.org
PASTOR APPRECIATION: Please join us on October 26th to thank Father Deno for all he does for our parish. We are trying something a little different this year. Instead of the usual cider and donuts we will be serving a variety of home-made muffins, etc. "baked by our own good cooks" . We hope to see you at the Parish Center after the 10:00 a.m. Mass on the 26th. The Hospitality Committee, the Ladies of St. James
ST. JAMES ALTAR SERVERS: Altar servers represent those who assist at the altar in presenting the gifts of bread and wine to the priest. The custom goes back to the time when men assisted the rabbis at the seder meals, and then served Jesus as he prayed. We are very privileged at St. James Parish to have dedicated and excellent servers. I thank parents and families for making it possible for your daughters and sons to serve. We are in need of more altar servers who are in third grade through high school. At the entrance to the church are forms for boys and girls to apply to be altar servers. Training for serving will take place on Saturday November 8th at 10:30 at St. James Church.

A Child’s Point of View
Teacher: Now, Simon, tell me, do you say prayers before eating?
Simon: No sir, I don't have to. My Mom is a good cook.
Teacher: Winnie, name one important thing we have today that we didn't
have ten years ago.
Winnie: Me!
Teacher Maria, go to the map and find North America.
Maria: Here it is.
Teacher: Correct. Now class, who discovered America?
Class: Maria.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: Parents whose children are in grades 6, 7 and 8 are invited to meet with their child on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM at the St. James Parish regarding the religious education of their child.
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: ““Visit the Blessed Sacrament often; there is your true life” (St. Paul of the Cross) Adoration is held throughout the year every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 6 am to 9 pm at St.
YEAR OF ST. PAUL: St. Paul experienced a conversion - was called by God - answered the call and became a powerful apostle by travelling throughout the ancient world spreading the Good News. How many times has God called you to spread the Good News? God wants each of us to know Sacred Scripture. That is where you find the Good News! St. Paul says “Our gospel did not come to you in word alone, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with much conviction.” Pray to the Holy Spirit so that you may read and know Sacred Scripture and shine like a light in the world.
WORLD MISSION SUNDAY: World Mission Sunday is a day set aside for Catholics world-wide to recommit themselves to the Church's missionary activity through prayer and sacrifice. Offerings from Catholics in the United States, on World Mission Sunday and throughout the year, are combined with offerings from Catholics around the globe and distributed to mission dioceses — about 1,100 at this time. Envelopes for this collection are in your packet of Sunday envelopes as well as at the entrance to the church.
FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP: Rights and Responsibilities
Every human being has a right to life, the fundamental right that makes all other rights possible. Each of us has a right to religious freedom, which enables us to live and act in accord with our God-given dignity, as well as a right to access to those things required for human decency—food and shelter, education and employment, health care and housing. Corresponding to these rights are duties and responsibilities—to one another, to our families, and to the larger society.

HURRICANE IKE RELIEF: Catholic Charities USA and the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston are providing humanitarian relief to many people whose lives were devastated by Hurricane Ike. They are also working to rebuild the Church where property was devastated by the storm. Bishop Robert Cunningham has appealed us to make generous contributions to be used in the recovery efforts. Contributions may be made through a check payable to our parish carrying a notation “Hurricane Ike Recovery.” Please place your check in the regular collection as soon as it is convenient. Thank you for your concern
MARRIAGE JUBILEE MASS: The annual Marriage Jubilee Mass to honor those couples in the Diocese of Ogdensburg who are observing significant wedding anniversaries will be held with Bishop Cunningham at St. Mary’s Cathedral at 2:30 PM on November 16th. All married couples are invited to come together with their families for this event. Couples celebrating jubilees and wishing to receive a certificate need to register for this event through their parish before November 1st. This event is co-sponsored by the St. Lawrence Society and the Family Life Office.
MARRIAGE TIP: Extroverts often talk in order to think; introverts need time to think before talking. If you're an extrovert and your spouse isn't, leave time for silence or agree that you'll both jot down thoughts before you start talking. Find more Marriage Rx at: www.foryourmarriage.org

YEAR OF ST. PAUL: During this great Year of St. Paul we will discover how this great apostle traveled throughout the ancient world spreading the Word of God during very difficult times. In a world filled with violence, suffering and injustice, each one of us can make it a better world by seeking the truths we find in Sacred Scripture. St. Paul’s message today reminds us that no matter how much wealth we have, or how poor we are…humility is a great gift. St Paul says, God will fully supply whatever you need, in accord with his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. Find truth in the Bible. Let the God of peace be with you! Read the Bible daily.
MISSION SUNDAY: Each year, on World Mission Sunday, all baptized Catholics gather for Mass – in small chapels, as well as in large cathedrals around the globe – to celebrate our missionary vocation, and to offer prayers and sacrifices for the missionary task. Our celebration this year on October 19th takes on added significance as the Church here at home marks the 100th anniversary of our “mission independence.” In 1908, a papal decree removed the designation “mission territory” from the United States. Up until that time, we were the beneficiaries of the generosity of the Catholics of Europe through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. Today, more than 1,150 young churches of Asia, Africa, the Pacific Islands, and Latin America have these same needs. As we remember our own mission history on World Mission Sunday, we can offer our prayers and financial help for the young and growing churches of the Missions today. Your generosity through the Propagation of the Faith will reach those who await the “Good News” of Jesus, who long to experience His hope and love. The special collection for World Mission Sunday will be take next weekend.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION THANK YOU!!: Our Religious Education Program began on Thursday. While parents are the main religion teachers of their children which they promised to do on their wedding day, and specifically renewed this promise on the day they had their children baptized, they are assisted in their responsibilities through Catechists. The parents of St. James Parish are privileged this year to have 6 parishioners who have volunteered to be religion teachers. They are:
Grade 1 Carolyn LaPlante
Grade 2 Joan Herron
Grade 3 Robert Robare, Jr.
Grade 4 Sandra Jock
Grade 5 Patricia Delisle
Substitute Elsie Delaney
Parents whose children are in grades 6-8 will meet at St. James Parish Center on Sunday, October 19th for assistance and books for the home instruction of their children.
FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP: The consistent ethic of life provides a moral framework for principled Catholic engagement in political life and, rightly understood, neither treats all issues as morally equivalent nor reduces Catholic teaching to one or two issues. Catholic voters should use the framework of Catholic teaching to examine candidates’ positions on issues affecting human life and dignity as well as issues of justice and peace . As A Catholic Church we do not endorse or oppose candidates. Rather, we seek to form the consciences of Catholics so that they can examine the positions of candidates and make choices based on Catholic moral and social teaching.

RESPECT LIFE WEEKEND: This weekend is known as Respect Life Weekend. From abortion to assisted suicide, from the destruction of “spare embryos” to creating life simply to destroy it, our society has regressed to seeing human beings as faceless burdens or “things” to be used. The sanctity of human life and the right to life of every human person are being attacked through legislation that promotes destruction and degradation of human life. Our rights to religious beliefs is once again being undermined in the political arena. Jesus restored, healed and breathed new life into every person who sought his help. Such is the calling of every Catholic who wishes to follow the way of Jesus. Every human being is priceless in the eyes of God. Let us build a world where human life is always loved and defended, every form of violence banished.
27TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: Jesus' parable in today's Gospel reading from Matthew tells of a very generous vineyard owner who gave his tenants everything they would ever need to survive. And how did they repay him? By killing not only the servants who went to the field to help, but also the owner's son. Clearly, Jesus was again foretelling of God's gifts to us and our rejection of his love, of his early messengers, and the rejection of his Son. God so loved us that he would give us Jesus Christ; not even our rejection, however, staves off God's love. It is enduring, clear, and for all times. The Catholic Church teaches us that even in the face of the greatest moral evil the rejection, persecution and death of Christ God brought by his grace the greatest of goods: the glorification of Christ and our redemption. Throughout our lives, time and again we will suffer rejection and the pains of unrequited love. To be truly in communion with God, the love in our hearts for each other must never

VATICAN DIRECTIVE ON THE USE OF THE NAME OF GOD: The U.S. bishops’ Committee on Divine Worship recently announced a new directive from the Vatican regarding the use of the name of God in the sacred liturgy. Specifically, the word Yahweh may no longer be "used or pronounced" in songs and prayers during liturgical celebrations. The decision was based on long-standing Jewish and Christian traditions of not pronouncing the divine name wherever it occurs in the biblical text. You may notice some small changes to a few songs that are sung during Mass from what is printed in your missals. Unfortunately, at the time the directive was announced, the 2009 editions of these books had already been printed and, in many cases, shipped. The 2010 editions will include revised versions of the songs with updated texts. If you would like more information, please visit www.ocp.org/directive08.

CATHOLICS AND PUBLIC POLICY: Catholics have an obligation to participate in shaping the moral character of society. It is a requirement of our faith, a part of the mission given to us by Jesus Christ. Faith helps us see more clearly the truth about human life and dignity that we also
understand through human reason. As people of both faith and reason, Catholics are called to bring truth to political life and to practice Christ’s commandment to love one another. According to Pope Benedict XVI, charity must animate the entire lives of the lay faithful and therefore also their political activity, lived as ‘social charity. The United States Constitution protects the right of individual believers and religious bodies to participate and speak out without government interference, favoritism, or discrimination. Civil law should recognize and protect a Catholic’s right and responsibility to participate in society without abandoning our central moral convictions. Our nation’s tradition of pluralism is enhanced, not threatened, when religious groups and people of faith bring their convictions into public life. The Catholic community brings to the political dialogue a consistent moral framework and broad experience serving those in need.

MARRIAGE: We congratulate and offer our prayers for a happy marriage to Justin Riel and Ashley Waldron who were married on August 30th.
WHY CATHOLICS MAKE THE SIGN OF THE CROSS: Making the Sign of the Cross may be the most common of all actions that Catholics do. We make it when we begin and end our prayers; we make it when we enter and leave a church; we start each Mass with it; we may even make it when we hear the Holy Name taken in vain, and when we pass in front of Catholic Church. In the Sign of the Cross, we profess the deepest mysteries of the Christian Faith: the Trinity--Father, Son, and Holy Spirit--and the death of Jesus on the Cross. The combination of the words and the action are a statement of what we believe. We mark ourselves as Christians through the Sign of the Cross. And yet, because we make the Sign of the Cross so often, we may be tempted to rush through it, to say the words without listening to them, to ignore the symbolism of tracing the shape of the Cross on our own bodies. Catholics aren't the only Christians to make the Sign of the Cross. All Eastern Catholics and Eastern Orthodox do as well, along with many Anglicans and Lutherans and a smattering of other Mainline Protestants.
THE YEAR OF SAINT PAUL: “Love Fulfils the Law” (Romans 13:8-10) The way we live as a Christian is to live out the words of St. Paul from the 2nd reading in today’s Liturgy “owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another; for the one who has loved one another has fulfilled the law.” Through the evangelizing of St. Paul this message was proclaimed throughout the world. The Year of St. Paul is an invitation to each of us to live out the words of St. Paul that our hope is in Christ and it is through His love for us that He surrendered His life on the cross. The year ahead is a powerful one for all Christian to become involved in some way such as reading the letters of St. Paul in the Bible. St. Paul, Apostle of the Gentiles, pray for us.
MARRIAGE TIP: "There is a season for everything...a time to weep and a time to laugh" (Ecclesiastes 3:4). A spouse who can make you laugh is a blessing. Tell a joke today, even if it's corny. Find more Marriage Rx at: www.foryourmarriage.org

PARENTS: “ Parents are the first evangelizers of children, a precious gift from the Creator, and begin by teaching them to say their first prayers. In this way a moral universe is built up, rooted in the will of God, where the child grows in the human and Christian values that gift life its full meaning.” (Pope Benedict XVI)
RESPECT LIFE: You shall not commit murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not corrupt the young. You shall not commit fornication. You shall not steal. You shall not kill an unborn child or murder a newborn infant. (from the DIDACHE, the Teaching of the Twelve Apostles, a Catholic Church document written between 60-100 AD.)

The Bishop’s Fund Appeal provides us the opportunity to share our blessings with others as we continually serve those who most need our help throughout the Diocese of Ogdensburg. Each year, we increasingly depend upon the generosity of our many parishioners throughout the Diocese to achieve our goal. We have great hope that we will be successful once again in 2008. This year marks the fiftieth year of the Bishop’s Fund Appeal. In this year’s Appeal, let us work together “From Generation to Generation” to continue the journey and carry out Christ’s Work in our community.
BAPTISM:
Jocelyn Christine and Jenna Marie Benware, daughters of Donald and Christine (LeDuc) Benware became members of the Catholic community through the Sacrament of Baptism on August 24th.
22ND Sunday in Ordinary Time:
God labors for us so that we might work fo for him. Gently, the Lord encourages us to take up the cross of our baptismal invitation and follow Jesus. This encouragement takes many forms tailored to each of our weaknesses and strengths. By pushing us, encouraging us and helping us, the Lord points us toward the goal of salvation. Jesus seeks us out;he pulls us toward him by many paths. Be quiet and feel his tug!.
THE YEAR OF SAINT PAUL:
Our duty as Christians is to be transformed by the life-giving word that has been given to us by Christ Jesus. By our Baptism, we are living temples of the Holy Spirit, holy and beloved. We are to offer our mind and body as a living sacrifice to become an acceptable gift to the Father. In this way, we like, Christ Jesus, become transformed from glory to glory. As we draw closer to celebrate the St. Paul Event, we prepare ourselves to become part of it as a Diocesan family. On the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross, Sunday, September 14, there will be a Solemn Vespers Celebration at 4 pm in St. Mary’s Cathedral, Ogdensburg. We welcome back, former Bishop Gerald M. Barbarito, who will be the homilist. A plenary indulgence can be received for those attending the Event and any other event connected with the Year of St. Paul. Each one of us can learn more about St. Paul through the reading of the letters of St. Paul in Sacred Scripture. Perhaps you can proclaim like St. Paul did when he said, “It is no longer I that lives, but Christ lives in me.” (Galatians 2:20) or…”But may I never boast of anything but the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Galatians 6:14) St. Paul, Apostle of the Gentiles, pray for us.

20th Sunday in Ordinary Time:
In today's Gospel reading from Matthew, Jesus is confronted by a woman asking for her daughter to be cleansed of demons. Notice that she does not ask Jesus if he is Lord before making her request, she already knows. Jesus does not answer her right away; when she again pleads for his mercy and refers to him as Lord, he grants her wish because of her persistence and her faith. Enabling this woman's persistence was her hope. Hope for goodness is the promise of God given through Jesus; it is the anchor of our soul, and it allows us to be happy even in the face of adversity. Hope is expressed and nourished in prayer. Perhaps you've been praying for something but feel your prayers haven't been answered? Continue to pray. Be persistent in your faith; never
THE YEAR OF SAINT PAUL:
“For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.” How grateful are we to God that His promises to us will never reverse? God’s design and plan of salvation is still unfolding. The mystery of God’s plan and love will be revealed in God’s providence and time. We, too, struggle in our faith journey to try and understand the meaning of our faith and our life. Can it be a way that the light of the Holy Spirit leads us to a deeper understanding and acceptance? Let us ask the Holy Spirit to help us understand God’s will more fully that we may recognize our gifts and call and persevere on the journey every day of our lives. St. Paul, Apostle of the Gentiles, pray for us.
MARRIAGE TIP:
Natural or national disasters can bring out the best in humanity as we rally to help those in need. A marriage crisis can also prompt a couple to sacrifice for each other or honestly deal with a recurring problem. Don’t wait for a disaster, however, to test your love. Prevention is better. AUGUST: THE MONTH OF THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY:
Every month, the Catholic Church offers us a particular devotion to concentrate on in our prayers. For August, it is devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Often, the Immaculate Heart is paired with the Sacred Heart of Jesus (the devotion we celebrate in June), and with good reason. The Sacred Heart represents Christ's love for mankind, while the Immaculate Heart of Mary represents the desire of the Blessed Virgin to bring all people to her Son.
There is no better example of the Christian life than that offered by Mary. Through our Prayers for August, which help to deepen our devotion to her Immaculate Heart, we can join the Mother of God in drawing closer to Christ

PRAYING WITH THE BIBLE
Pick a passage and read the text.
Consider the context (culture, history of the time).
Grasp the Author's intent. What was he trying to say or get across to the audience he was writing to?
Think about how this passage speaks to you today. Reading the Bible is really about listening, and a big part of listening is looking to your own experience in search of what God is saying to you (the technical term is discernment).
ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT:

THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY:
Catholics observe the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary this year on Friday, August 15 -- celebrating Mary's being taken bodily to Heaven after her death. This feast is sometimes referred to as the Dormition (falling asleep) of the Virgin Mary. The Feast of the Assumption celebrates both the departure of Mary from this life by her natural death, and her assumption bodily into heaven. Along with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (December 8) the Assumption is a principal feast of the Blessed Virgin and a Holy Day of Obligation in the United States. The belief of the assumption of Mary into heaven after her death is first expressed in narratives of the fifth and sixth centuries. Even though these were never official, they bear witness to the very early belief in this teaching of the Catholic Church. We have no real knowledge of the day, year, and manner of Mary’s death. The dates which have been assigned to her death vary between three and fifteen years after Jesus’ death. There is an important difference, of course, between the ascension of Jesus into Heaven after His Resurrection, and the assumption of Mary. To ascend is to rise up under one's own power; while to be assumed means something that is done to a person.
19th Sunday in Ordinary Time:
We meet the Lord in the strangest places. Elijah spent the night listening to he wind, feeling the earthquake and surrounded with fire, but the Lord was not in any of these. He came in a gentle breeze. We would like great events for meeting our God, but most often we stirs our hearts and minds very gently. If we listen, we encounter the Lord. Like Peter, we walk toward the Lord. The Lord says, “Come!” We respond: “Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus, and sustain our faith.”
THE YEAR OF SAINT PAUL:
Was God’s plan of salvation frustrated by Israel’s rejection of the coming of the Messiah? Paul recounts the many blessings of the Israelites: “theirs the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; theirs the patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, is the Messiah.” God’s plan of salvation is for all people, Jews, Christians and non-Christians. As Christians, we cannot boast of our superior advantage over the Jews or non-Christians. God’s choice of His love for His people, especially, the Jews, is forever. Let us pray for Church unity in charity. St. Paul, Apostle of the Gentiles, pray for us.
MARRIAGE TIP:
Having a successful marriage depends not so much on FINDING the right person but BEING the right person. Is there a change I can make in my own behavior that will make our marriage happier?
