SAINT PAUL - DID YOU KNOW....
When the king of Damascus tried to kill him, St. Paul’s friends had him climb into a basket, then they lowered him from the window in the city walls to safety.
St. Paul studied with a prominent rabbi, Gamaliel, in Jerusalem when he was a teenager.
St. Paul had at least one sister who lived in Jersalem. When Paul’s enemies planned to ambush and murder him, his sister’s son warned him and the Roman authorities.
St. Paul’s first convert was Lydia, a business woman who sold purple cloth.
St. Paul is represented by a sword. Around 67 AD, as a Roman citizen, Paul could not be crucified nor stoned, but rather was accorded the “honor” of beheading by a sword.
St. Paul wrote 13 letters to communities or individuals. These are in the Bible. They make up one-third of the New Testament.

PRAYER FOR THE YEAR OF ST. PAUL
JUNE 28, 2008-JUNE 29, 2009

Lord God, You filled the Apostle Paul with Your spirit, and by his witness and words the Gospel spread. This year we ask that You inspire men and women in the Diocese of Ogdensburg and St. James Parish -- especially those discerning vocations to the priesthood and religioius life -- to hear Your Word and spread Your Gospel. Like St. Paul, let us not be afraid. Like St. Paul, let us proclaim Christ crucified. Like St. Paul, if it be Your will, let us pour out our lives for the sake of Jesus and His Church. We ask this through the same Christ our Lord. Amen

DO YOU KNOW WHO ARE THE ABUSERS?
Estimates are that approximately 60% of abusers are men, 15 to 20% are women, and 20 to 40% are men and women acting together. So while men are indeed the majority of sexual abusers, it is dangerous to underestimate the risk that female sexual abusers also pose to children. Among educators, 57.2% of abusers are male, and 42.4% of abusers are female. For particular help you may call Sister Ellen Donohue at 315-293-2920 or email: edonahue@dioogdensburg.org.

God has given each one of us a job to do for the growth of his church.

A FATHER’S DAY BLESSING
The following blessing may be used with the table blessing on Father’s Day. God Our Father, in your wisdom and love you made all things. Bless our father. Let the example of his faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, his family, may honor him always with a spirit of profound respect. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen

HOW DID YOU HEAR THE GOOD NEWS TODAY?
Television, radio, newspapers, magazines, the Internet—all are places people go to get news and entertainment. But what do we get, exactly, when we turn on “the tube” or log on to the Internet? As a result of your support of the CATHOLIC COMMUNICATION CAMPAIGN (CCC), Catholics and all media consumers have increased opportunities to find Gospel-grounded messages and resources to strengthen their families and their faith. Please contribute generously to CCC in today’s collection. Half of all donations received will remain in our diocese to fund local Catholic communication efforts including the North Country Catholic, our diocesan newspaper. Thank you for your generous response.

YEAR OF ST. PAUL
Paul’s Efforts to Keep the Faith Alive: Paul did not forget the faith communities he had established. He became a prolific writer. He had a profound and enduring formative influence in the development of Christianity. Thirteen letters are attributed to Paul. His letters are full of expositions of what Christians should believe and how they should live. He established clearly what it is to be a Christian, and the relationship of the Christian to the Risen Christ. Read Paul’s Letters to the Romans, the First and Second Corinthians, Galatians, Philippians, First Thessalonians and Second Thessalonians and Philemon. Saul of Tarsus—St. Paul....a great evangelizer for the life of the Church today!

Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time:
God chooses his workers despite their human familings: Abraham and Sarah, too “old” to do anything “useful”; Matthew, a tax collector for the Roman occupiers; and each of us. Sinners and the useless are saved by their faith. Our faith witnesses to the resurrection. Jesus died for our sins and was raised up to life to justify -- to save -- us. We share this witness with our ancestors, and we will hare with our descendants in God’s familiy.

BAPTISM:
We welcome Jason Patrick Mather, son of Patrick and Heidi (Rabideau) Mather who became a member of the Catholic Church by Baptism on June 1, 2008. May he, his parents and his brothers be blessed by Our Lord Jesus.

YEAR OF ST. PAUL
Arrested in Jerusalem, Imprisoned in Caesarea, Taken to Rome and Death: Paul continues to persuade the people that it is by God’s grace that we are saved. He set out from Corinth to Jerusalem by way of Macedonia, spending Passover at Philippi. Paul’s sea journey to Rome included a shipwreck on the island of Malta where he preached the gospel and converted the people to Christianity. Paul spent two years in Rome under house arrest, continued to preach the gospel, and to teach about Jesus being the Christ. He was martyred under Nero around 64 AD. Tradition would have Paul buried on the Via Ostensis, a place commemorated by the Basilica of St. Paul outside the Walls. His feast day is June 29th. Read again the Acts of the Apostles where you will relive the efforts of Paul and the apostles to form Christianity and the life of the Church today according to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time:
Today's Gospel reading from Matthew presents us with a particular challenge. In it, Jesus asks us to look inward to our faith and allow every aspect of our lives to flow from our belief in God. He warns that merely "talking the talk" isn't the way to enter the kingdom of heaven. Our faith-built upon the rock of the very core of our hearts-is the only true way, and if we do so we can withstand anything. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us that often the Church is referred to as the building of God. Jesus referred to himself as the stone which the builders rejected but would become the cornerstone for the Church. By
succession through Peter and the apostles, we have also become the building stones of the Church; to keep the foundation strong we must keep our faith as strong as that first cornerstone.
