ST. PATRICK’S DAY DINNER: St. Elizabeth’s Church, Elizabethtown, will hold its annual St. Patrick’s Day Dinner on Sunday, March 15th at the Parish Hall from 2-6 PM. The dinner will consist of Corned Beef or Ham, cabbage, carrots, potatoes, home-made bread, milk, coffee or tea and gingerbread with topping. Adults: $8. Children under 12: $4.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS: Public Stations of the Cross will be held each Friday of Lent at 7:00 PM at St. James Church. Please try to include these as part of your Lenten prayer.

SPECIAL ASH WEDNESDAY COLLECTION: While the countries of central and eastern Europe and the former USSR endured decades of Communist oppression, the Church suffered serious wounds to its spiritual life and pastoral capacity to serve its people. For generations Church leaders were killed or imprisoned. Catechists were persecuted, and churches, monasteries, and seminaries were closed or destroyed. The bishops of the region are faced with the formidable task of restoring its church structures and, more importantly, rebuilding the spiritual center of its communities. The Collection for the Catholic Church in Central and Eastern Europe provides assistance to these Catholics.

MARRIAGE TIP: "It's not differences but how we handle them that separate successful marriages from the failures. Disagreeing doesn't predict divorce. Stonewalling, avoidance, contempt, criticism, and the silent treatment predict divorce. Find more Marriage Rx at:www.foryourmarriage.org

Lenten Regulations 2009
LENT this year begins on Ash Wednesday, February 25. Lent is the holiest season of the year for Christians, especially Catholics. There are certain sacrifices we make and certain traditions that we observe:

ABSTINENCE: All Catholics who have reached their 14th birthday must abstain totally from meat on the following days: Ash Wednesday (February 25th), all Fridays of Lent and Good Friday (April 10th).

FASTING: All Catholics between the ages of 19 and 59 must also observe the Law of Fast on the following days: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting, that is, eating less, involves limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. But together, they should not equal a full meal. Lighter nourishment may be taken on two other occasions during the course of the day.

EASTER DUTY: All Catholics, after they have made their first Holy Communion, must confess their sins in the Sacrament of Confession at least once a year. They must also receive Holy Communion at least once each year during the Easter season, which this year extends from March 1, the First Sunday of Lent, until Trinity Sunday, June 7.

PENANCE: The entire season of Lent should be observed in a spirit of prayer and penance. Spending extra time in prayer or Bible study, attending daily Mass, making the Stations of the Cross in St. James Church on Fridays of Lent at 7:00 pm, voluntary sacrifice and self-denial, combined with works of charity and service to others, are all excellent ways to obey the Lord’s command to reform our lives and to prepare for the joyful celebration of Easter.

SISTERS OF ST. JOSEPH LAY APOSTOLATE PROGRAM: The Sisters of St. Joseph and their Lay Associate Group from the Mountains and St.
Lawrence River areas invite anyone who is interested in learning about our Lay Associate Program to an inquiry meeting on Sunday, March 8 at 2 -4 at St. John in the Wildness Convent in Lake Clear . And/or to a Lenten Retreat on Sat., March 28 beginning at 10:00 –2:00 pm at the St. Thomas More Newman Center in Canton. The Associates meet once a month to learn about the spirituality of the Sisters of St. Joseph, pray together, and discuss ways to deepen one’s spiritual life. This group is open to men and women. If you are interested, please call Sister Carol Kraegor, 518-891-2286 in Lake Clear; Sister Constance Sylver, 315-322-5801 in Madrid, or Sister Bethany Fitzgerald, 315-386-2989 in Canton.

DISEASE AND SIN: The begging leper and the paralytic dropped in, and both wanted to be cured of their ailments—including their sin. Overcoming religious fears and social customs, they made their requests. Jesus replied, Yes, of course, and then made the point that healing from sin and healing from disease are two sides of the same coin. Do we have courage enough to overcome worries and beg healing from the Lord in the church? If we seek forgivness through the Sacrament of Confession, Jesus will surely reply, Yes, of course. Lent is a great time to get your conscience in order.

ST. VALENTINE: Valentine was a third century Roman Martyr. Three hundred years after the death of Jesus Christ, the Roman emperors still demanded that everyone believe in the Roman gods. Valentine, a Catholic priest, had been thrown in prison for his teachings. On February 14, Valentine was beheaded, not only because he was a Catholic, but also because he had performed a miracle. He supposedly cured the jailer's daughter of her blindness. The night before he was executed, he wrote the jailer's daughter a farewell letter, signing it From Your Valentine. His martyrdom most likely took place on the Flammian Way, two miles outside the city of Rome around 250 AD during the Decian persecution. In honor of St. Valentine, forgive and enemy, contact an old friend and tell someone you love them.

MONTH OF THE FAMILY: By tradition, the Catholic Church dedicates each month of the year to a certain devotion. In February, it is the Holy Family, the perfect example of family life for all Christians. In your personal prayers to the Holy Family, meditate on the example of the Holy Family and ask the Holy Family to intercede on behalf of your family. Incorporated these into your daily prayers during this month.

LOVE GOD AND LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR Love God wholeheartedly and love your neighbor as yourself, is how Jesus sums up the whole law and the prophets. These vertical and horizontal loves are imaged in the cross of Christ Jesus, which binds all creation together and leads all creation to God. We receive the cross in baptism as a sign that we are servants of the living God who raised his son, Jesus, from the dead so that Jesus might save us from sin and retribution. How do you bear your baptismal cross before humankind and before God?

WORLD DAY OF THE SICK: The World Day of the Sick is celebrated this year on Wednesday, February 11, on the day when the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette Soubiroux, a fourteen year old girl at the grotto of Massabielle nears Lourdes in southern France 151 years ago. Bernadette was told to dig a spot in the topsoil. Water began to flow from the spot. The water from this still flowing spring has shown remarkable healing power, though it contains no curative property that science can identify. The Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes is the most visited pilgrimage site in the world. This World Day of the Sick is a day to pray for and to remember all those who are sick and to recognize and to honor those who work in healthcare and those who serve as caregivers.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS: Catholic school education is one of the great and generous works of the Church. Its graduates have become leaders of this country, teachers, religious men and women and business entrepreneurs. Without doubt Catholic schools have had a far-reaching impact on shaping the world. At this time some parents are making decisions to enrol their children in a Catholic school available to them. The following Catholic Schools are available to the parents of St. James. If you have an interest in giving your child a Catholic school education, go to its website, phone and visit the Catholic:

TAX RETURN TIME: Before you file your tax return away for the year, you might want to take a minute to determine what percentage you are giving away. Your tax return tells you not only how much income God has entrusted to you last year, but also what portion you gave away. Simply take your total charitable gross income. Move the decimal point over two places. This is the percentage you gave away last year. Are you pleased with that number? If not, make plans now to improve your giving in 2009.

MARRIAGE TIP: What words have you said in the past week that you wish you could take back? Here's a rule of thumb to monitor your speech: Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it good?. Find more Marriage Rx at:www.foryourmarriage.org

THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD: Forty days after Christmas (Monday, February 2) already Jesus is presented by Joseph and Mary at the temple to fulfil the law of Moses—to do what is right. They are greeted by the old man Simeon who sees the “light of the gentiles come,” and the aged widow Anna who speaks of the “deliverance of Jerusalem.” Again, even in God’s temple Jesus is presented and accepted as God saving both Jews and gentiles. We come in procession on this Candlemas Day with specially blessed candles and lights to meet Jesus, the light of glory, on whom we are nourished in the Eucharist. Are you transparent enough for God’s glory to shine through you?
