The observance spread to other churches, and in 1914 became a civic holiday. Since the Middle Ages Roman Catholics had long observed the Fourth Sunday of Lent as “Mothering Sunday.” On Mothers’ Day we give thanks for our Mothers and all women of the world who have joined with God in the wonder of bringing forth new life. "The loveliest masterpiece Of the heart of God Is the heart of a mother." (Thérèse of Lisieux)
