HEALING MINISTRY: Living Waters Healing Ministry Mass at St. Alexander’s Church, Morrisonville, First Thursday of every month at 6:30 PM.

MARRIAGE TIP: When’s the last time you and your spouse have prayed together to know God’s will for your family? Spend time today asking the Lord what more he has to teach you. Pray to be always ready to do His will. Find more Marriage Rx at www.foryourmarriage.org.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING: The United States Catholic Conference and Bishop Terry LaValley invite you to pray for victims of human trafficking on February 8, 2014. This is the Feast Day of St. Josephine Bakhita. She was from Darfur in the Sudan. St. Josephine was kidnapped as a child and sold into slavery. You can learn more about St. Josephine Bakhita and pray for the end of this horrible offense against the dignity and the sanctity of human life. To access a copy of the prayer, the prayer service and additional facts about Human Trafficking, visit Catholic Charities website: www.cathcharities.org. Pray on your own or invite others to pray with you.
PRAYER: God of hope and freedom, inspire and strengthen us in our work to loosen the chains of human trafficking in our world, so that like St. Josephine Bakhita, we may stand firm in our resolve to create a slavefree world. Through Christ our Lord.

SIMPLY STATED: Whenever material things, money, worldliness, become the center of our lives, they possess us; we lose our very identity as human beings.  How do some people, perhaps ourselves included, end up becoming self-absorbed and finding security in material things which ultimately rob us of our face, our human face? This is what happens when we no longer remember God.  (from a Homily preached by Pope Francis at a Mass for Catechists)

STATEMENT OF GIVING FOR INCOME TAXES:  If you wish to receive a statement of your financial contributions to St. James Church for 2013, please indicate this on your Sunday offering envelope so that we can assure confidentiality.

RESPECT LIFE COLLECTION:  The annual diocesan collection to support pro-life initiatives is taken up in our parish this weekend.  Funds are distributed within the diocese to support local activities in various communities that support the value of human life. This collection will support the ongoing Respect Life efforts in the Diocese of Ogdensburg. Last year, this collection was able to fund twenty grants totaling over $70,000 to help build a culture of life in the North Country. Those receiving grants supported important local Pro-Life efforts such as:  the Gabriel Project, a parish-based crisis pregnancy apostolate that provides spiritual and material help to single mothers and families; Plattsburgh’s Birthright which supports women in distress with an unplanned pregnancy, offering alternatives to abortion and free pregnancy tests; and Carthage’s Brook Haven House, a Christian home for unwed moms. Bishop LaValley has established support for human life as an ongoing priority of the Church here.

HEALING MINISTRY: Living Waters Healing Ministry Mass at St. Alexander’s Church, Morrisonville, First Thursday of every month at 6:30 PM.

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY: We are celebrating the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2014 on January 18-25.  Begun in 1908, these days have been set aside each year so that Christians the world over may share the prayer of Jesus That they may all be one as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me (John 17:21). Promoting Christian unity is an ecumenical movement among Christians to pray for unity among all Christians. Prayers for each day of the Octave can be found on http://www.geii.org  Let us continue to pray for Christian Unity so that one day “all will be one”.

WHY DID JESUS ASK TO BE BAPTIZED? Neither John the Baptist nor Jesus invented baptism. It had been practiced for centuries among the Jews as a ritual equivalent of Confession. It was common for Jewish people to make a spiritual cleansing in a special pool called a MIKVEH--literally a "collection of water". This was said to remove spiritual impurity and sin. Men did this weekly on the eve of the Sabbath. Women did it monthly. Orthodox Jews still retain the rite. Jesus transformed this continual ritual into the one single, definitive act by which we begin our faith in the Sacrament of Baptism.

BAPTISM SPONSORS:  Sponsors for Baptism are to be at least 16 years of age, have received Holy Communion and Confirmation, and practice their Catholic faith.  A baptized person who belongs to a non-Catholic church community may be admitted in the company of a Catholic sponsor, serving as a Christian witness.

MARRIAGE TIP: Welcoming a child, through birth or adoption, is an act of faith as well as an act of love Pray for couples who want a child but are infertile as well as for those who have an untimely pregnancy and are afraid. Bless your child today. Find more Marriage Rx at www.foryourmarriage.org.

NEW BEGINNINGS:  The “New Beginnings” group for divorced or separated individuals has again begun meeting weekly under the direction of Mr. Robert Dominic.  They are held every Wednesday from 7:00 to 9:00 pm in the Upper room at Saint Peter’s Church.   Anyone interested should contact Deacon Mark  at 563-1692.

FUNERAL: A funeral was celebrated this week for Robert Rule.  Please remember him and his family in your prayers.

STORMY WEATHER: Bishop LaValley of the Diocese of Ogdensburg urges all Catholics to heed local travel advisories and restrictions as indicated by emergency management  officials, including restrictions in travel due to the ice storm warning.  The faithful are encouraged to use prudence and extreme caution when planning to travel to Mass.  Catholics are reminded that the obligation to attend Mass does not apply in those situations where conditions are extremely difficult or dangerous.

GLUTEN FREE HOSTS: If you are in need of a gluten free host, simply inform Fr. Deno before Mass, and he will make sure there is one available for you at Communion.
