POPE FRANCIS: With a puff of white smoke from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel and to the cheers of thousands of rain-soaked faithful, a gathering of Catholic cardinals picked a new pope from among their midst on Wednesday — choosing the cardinal from Argentina, the first South American to ever lead the church. The new pope, 76, will be called Francis, the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church. He is also the first non-European leader of the church in more than 1,000 years. Pope Francis is the first pope to come from the New World and also the first pope ever to come from the Society of Jesus—the Jesuits. Born on December 17, 1936, Jorge Mario Bergoglio was ordained a priest four days before his 33rd birthday, on December 13, 1969. Francis is now mentioned as part of our Eucharistic Prayer at every Mass.

Talk is cheap. Being a person of one's word and following through with action makes communication true. Find more Marriage Rx at www.foryourmarriage.org “HOLY” SMOKE: For the election of a new Pope each Cardinal submits a secret ballot. Two-thirds of the cardinals must choose the same person. If this doesn’t happen, they vote again. Each day during the conclave the cardinals vote up to four times. If they do not come to an agreement the ballots are burned with some damp straw that makes the smoke black. When the smoke comes out of the chimney, the people outside the Vatican know that a pope has not yet been elected. Once the election is final, the ballots are burned without the damp straw and white smoke comes out of the chimney. This signals that the Church has a new pope!
