PRAYER FOR FAMILIES
In good times and in bad,
in sickness and in health,
we belong to each other
as we belong to you, God ever faithful.
By morning and by night
may your name be on our lips,
a blessing to all our days:
so may kindness and patience be ever among
us, a hunger for justice,
and songs of thankfulness in all we do.
May the Lord Jesus,
who lived with his holy family in Nazareth,
dwell also with our family,
and keep us from all evil,
and make all of us in one heart and mind.
Amen.
FUNERAL: A funeral was celebrated this week for Bernard Hayes. Please remember him and his family in your prayers.
ST BROTHER ANDRE EVENT: St. Peter’s Parish in Plattsburgh will celebrate the Feast Day of St. Brother Andre on Sunday afternoon, January 6th. Activities will include: adoration and prayer, film, Christmas Carols, refreshments and The Sacrament of the Sick. All will occur in and around the Chapel of St. Frere Andre and the Emmaus Room. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will begin after the 11 am Mass and conclude with Benediction at 3:30pm. A special film on St Andre will be shown twice during the afternoon. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and veneration of a relic of St. Brother Andre will continue the entire time in the Chapel. All are welcome to all or part of the afternoon.
MARRIAGE TIP: Have a tough decision to make? There are two extremes to avoid. Rationalization means you play loose with the truth and talk yourself into doing what you always wanted to do anyway. Scrupulosity involves following the letter of the law more than the spirit. Seek the golden mean. Find more Marriage Rx at www.foryourmarriage.org
2013 SUNDAY OFFERING ENVELOPES: Please pick up your 2013 Sunday offering envelopes. Anyone wishing to use envelopes who are not currently using them can take an unmarked box. Be sure to place your name and address on the first few envelopes so that your name and number can be recorded. Children should pick up envelopes for themselves.
HOLY FAMILY SUNDAY: St. Joseph doesn’t get much space in
the New Testament. Joseph protected Jesus from King Herod. The king was worried when he heard that a child had been born who would be the king of the Jews. He asked the wise men to search for this child in Bethlehem and then come back to report to him. He told the wise men he wanted to pay homage to the new king. But the wise men were warned in a dream not to go back to Herod. Fearing a new king, Herod sent soldiers to kill all the male children in Bethlehem who were two years old or younger. Joseph, warned by an angel, fled with his family to Egypt to escape Herod’s plot. There they lived until King Herod died, when Joseph could safely move the family back to Nazareth.
THANKS: Thanks to all who helped in any way to make Christmas Eve and Day 2012 a most blessed and prayerful time of the year. Among the many who helped we are most thankful to parents whose children provided Christmas hymns, to those who prepared the church, members of the choir and organist, Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Altar Servers and Ushers.
NEW YEARS DAY: In the Catholic Church New Year’s Day is a holy day of obligation and is celebrated in honor of Mary, the Holy Mother of God. Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM.

ADVENT: Advent is the four weeks before Christmas. It introduces us to a new year in the calendar of the Catholic Church. The Advent wreath in homes of believers is one of the symbols of Advent. Making a wreath is easy. On a wreath of evergreens space four purple candles. A fifth white candle may be placed in the center of the wreath. Each day of the first week of Advent light just one candle, recite as a family a short prayer, and then snuff out the candle. Repeat the same each week of Advent lighting an extra candle each week. The white candle can be lighted on Christmas day.

Year of Faith Prayer
Holy God, We thank you for the gracious gift of faith.
With the apostles before us, we ask that you open our hearts to the power of your Word and increase our faith that we may be bold followers and joyful witnesses to the message and mission of your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen
MASS TIMES WHILE TRAVELING: Parishioners who are travelling may call 1-800-627-7846 (1-800-MASSTIMES) or http://www.masstimes.org for the location and schedule of Masses in Catholic Churches throughout the USA and other countries.
GLUTEN-FREE HOSTS AVAILABLE: If you are in need of a gluten-free Communion host, please advise Father Deno before the Mass you attend, and the special host will be set aside for you.
THE FINAL PURIFICATION OR PURGATORY: All who die in God’s grace and friendship are assured of eternal salvation. After our death the Church teaches that may need to undergo purification which is known as PURGATORY. Those in Purgatory will definitely go to heaven, but not just yet. From the time of Jesus Catholics have honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers and Masses for them. This is mentioned in the Book of Maccabees (12:43-46). The belief is that if the dead were in hell, no prayers could help them, and if they were in heaven, they wouldn’t need any prayers. Catholics do not see Purgatory as a place of pain and torment. November has traditionally been the month when we think more deeply of those who have died.

WHAT IS THE YEAR OF FAITH? At certain times in the history of the Catholic Church, popes have called upon the faithful to dedicate themselves to deepening their understanding of a particular aspect of the faith. The upcoming Year of Faith is a “summons to an authentic and renewed conversion to the Lord, the One Savior of the world”. In other words, the Year of Faith is an opportunity for Catholics to experience a conversion – to turn back to Jesus and enter into a deeper relationship with him. The “door of faith” is opened at one’s baptism, but during this year Catholics are called to open it again, walk through it and rediscover and renew their relationship with Christ and his Church.

MISSIONARY COOPERATION APPEAL: The St. James Parish Missionary Coop Appeal is scheduled for the weekend of July 28-19. This year it is for the Diocese of Fairbanks in Alaska. The Diocese of Fairbanks stretches from the Canadian border to Russia to the Arctic Ocean. It has 14,500 Catholics, out of a general population of 161, 000, many of whom are Athabascan Indians. There are 20 active priests working in the diocese, roughly one priest for every 20,000 square miles. Many of the parishes and missions see a priest every other month. Celebrations of the Word with Holy Communion replaces Sunday Mass when a priest is unavailable. Only a small number of parishes are able to support themselves financially. The diocese has KNOM, its radio station in the city of Nome.
THE ANGELUS PRAYER: Some parishioners have asked about the ringing of our Church bells three times a day. The bells are rung for the Angelus Prayer. Since the 14th century, the Angelus Prayer offered Catholics a way to connect their daily lives to the mysteries of their faith by ringing Church bells at morning, noon, and evening to invite them to remember the birth of Jesus. In the silence after each ringing of the bell pray the following V and one Hail Mary:
V. The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary and she conceived of the Holy Spirit. Pray Hail Mary...
V. Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it done unto me according to your word. Pray Hail Mary...
V. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. Pray Hail Mary...
Conclusion: Pour forth, we beg you, O Lord, your grace into our hearts that we to whom the Incarnation of Christ your Son was made known by the message of an angel may by his Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of his Resurrection, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

There are 20 active priests working in the diocese, roughly one priest for every 20,000 square miles. Many of the parishes and missions are lucky to see a priest every other month. Only a small number of parishes are able to support themselves financially. The diocese is also home to KNOM, the oldest Catholic radio station in the USA. Sister Anne Hogan, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph, had planned to be with us for the appeal but has cancelled due to emergency heart surgery this week.

FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM: This is a time of prayer for our country which concludes on July 4, Independence Day. During these days our Catholic Church calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power such as St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome. Culminating on Independence Day, this special period of prayer and public action is to emphasize both our Christian and American heritage of liberty. Human beings perceive the requirements of their conscience through the divine law. They must follow faithfully their conscience. No one should either be forced to act contrary to his or her conscience or be forbidden to act in accordance with his or her conscience. This is especially the case when it involves one’s religious beliefs. Religious liberty is understood to be both private and public. It cannot be limited to what takes places in houses of worship.
