BISHOPS FUND APPEAL: In the coming week, you will receive a letter and brochure from Bishop Cunningham asking you to join him in supporting the 2008 Bishop’s Fund Appeal. The Bishop’s Fund Appeal provides us the opportunity to share our blessings with others as we continually serve those who most need our help throughout the Diocese of Ogdensburg. Each
year, we increasingly depend upon the generosity of our many parishioners throughout the Diocese to achieve our goal. This year marks the fiftieth year of the Bishop’s Fund Appeal. Next weekend we will have “Commitment Weekend” for the Appeal in our parish. Please remember - every gift makes a
difference – every gift counts. You are invited to bring your gift next weekend for Commitment Weekend and place it in the collection basket or return it to Bishop Cunningham in the envelope provided. Online giving is also available at www.dioogdensburg.org/development. Thank you once again for
your generosity and support.

MARRIAGE: We congratulate and offer our prayers for a happy marriage to Justin Riel and Ashley Waldron who were married on August 30th.

WHY CATHOLICS MAKE THE SIGN OF THE CROSS: Making the Sign of the Cross may be the most common of all actions that Catholics do. We make it when we begin and end our prayers; we make it when we enter and leave a church; we start each Mass with it; we may even make it when we hear the Holy Name taken in vain, and when we pass in front of Catholic Church. In the Sign of the Cross, we profess the deepest mysteries of the Christian Faith: the Trinity--Father, Son, and Holy Spirit--and the death of Jesus on the Cross. The combination of the words and the action are a statement of what we believe. We mark ourselves as Christians through the Sign of the Cross. And yet, because we make the Sign of the Cross so often, we may be tempted to rush through it, to say the words without listening to them, to ignore the symbolism of tracing the shape of the Cross on our own bodies. Catholics aren't the only Christians to make the Sign of the Cross. All Eastern Catholics and Eastern Orthodox do as well, along with many Anglicans and Lutherans and a smattering of other Mainline Protestants.

THE YEAR OF SAINT PAUL: “Love Fulfils the Law” (Romans 13:8-10) The way we live as a Christian is to live out the words of St. Paul from the 2nd reading in today’s Liturgy “owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another; for the one who has loved one another has fulfilled the law.” Through the evangelizing of St. Paul this message was proclaimed throughout the world. The Year of St. Paul is an invitation to each of us to live out the words of St. Paul that our hope is in Christ and it is through His love for us that He surrendered His life on the cross. The year ahead is a powerful one for all Christian to become involved in some way such as reading the letters of St. Paul in the Bible. St. Paul, Apostle of the Gentiles, pray for us.

MARRIAGE TIP: "There is a season for everything...a time to weep and a time to laugh" (Ecclesiastes 3:4). A spouse who can make you laugh is a blessing. Tell a joke today, even if it's corny. Find more Marriage Rx at: www.foryourmarriage.org

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION: Registration forms for St. James Parish Religious Education Program are available at the entrance to the Church. Parents are requested to pick up a form for each child in Grades 1-5. Complete the form and place it in the box designated for this purpose at the entrance to the Church. Include with the form a book fee of $20. Parents of these children must be registered members of St. James Parish. The Religious Education classes begin on Thursday, October 9th. (Parents of children in Grades 6-8 will meet in St. James Parish Center on Sunday, October 19th at 2:00 pm. The second year of Confirmation preparation classes for students enrolled in this class last year will begin on Sunday evening, October 5th.)

PARENTS: “ Parents are the first evangelizers of children, a precious gift from the Creator, and begin by teaching them to say their first prayers. In this way a moral universe is built up, rooted in the will of God, where the child grows in the human and Christian values that gift life its full meaning.” (Pope Benedict XVI)

RESPECT LIFE: You shall not commit murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not corrupt the young. You shall not commit fornication. You shall not steal. You shall not kill an unborn child or murder a newborn infant. (from the DIDACHE, the Teaching of the Twelve Apostles, a Catholic Church document written between 60-100 AD.)

THANK YOU JUDY! Gardeners know very well that plants and flower need “tender, loving care.” The beautiful potted plants in front of the church, parish house and parish center are the product of the tender, loving care of Judy Bassett who designed the assortment, and who weekly, all summer, trims, waters and fertilizes them. Thanks so very much Judy for bringing God’s beauty to our buildings!
