Bulletin for the Week of May 9, 2009

Mission Intention for May
That the laity and Christian communities may be diligent in promoting priestly and religious vocations.

HOLY DAY: The Feast of the Ascension of the Lord will be observed as a Holy Day of Obligation on Thursday, May 21st. Masses for this day will be at 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM.

CAMP GUGGENHEIM AND SPORTS CAMP: Brochures and application forms for Camp Guggenheim and SportsCamp are available at the entrance to the church or online at www.CatholicCamps.org or call 315-393-2920 ext. 411.

SUPPORT CATHOLIC CHARITIES: It is all about Life! We are a Church that believes that loving God and loving our neighbor are intimately linked. Today, each of you has a chance to reach out and show the compassionate face of Christ to your brothers and sisters in need. Catholic Charities provides quality and compassionate services to hundreds of our North Country neighbors. Catholic Charities also organizes and leads the advocacy efforts for the diocese. In both the direct service work and in the efforts to organize people to stand up for public policies that respect the sanctity and the dignity of human life, Catholic Charities needs your prayerful and financial assistance. For more information on the programs/services of Catholic Charities throughout the North Country visit their website: www.cathcharities.org

WANTED: SETON CATHOLIC CENTRAL is looking for families willing to host international students for the 2009-2010 school year. Applicants are asked to introduce our American culture to a teenager from abroad. Each participating family will receive a stipend of $550 per month per child. More information is available by contacting Mrs. Lynn Gilbert, the Director of International Students, at 518.561.4031 for an application.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: There we can also constantly ask Him: ‘Lord send laborers into Your harvest!’” (Pope Benedict XVI, Sept. 11, 2006). Eucharistic Adoration is held throughout the year every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 6 am to 9 pm at St. John’s Church Adoration Chapel, downstairs. Everyone is invited to spend some quiet time with Jesus anytime during these hours. For more information about spending a special hour with Jesus weekly, or becoming a substitute, please call 561-5083 or email us at Sjohnsadoration@aol.com

MARRIAGE TIP: Many marriages would be better if the husband and the wife clearly understood that they are on the same side. Never undercut or blindside your spouse. The team will suffer. Find more Marriage Rx at www.foryourmarriage.org

FIRST COMMUNION: This weekend we celebrate the First Holy Communion of our young girls and boys. It is the day they become one with Jesus. We thank their parents for having helped them to this day. We also thank Mrs. Joan Herron, their religion teacher.

MOTHERS DAY - GETTING BACK TO THE ROOTS: On Mothers’ Day we give thanks for our Mothers and all women of the world who have joined with God in the wonder of bringing forth new life. In the original spirit of Mother’s Day and with the example of our heavenly Mother in mind, here are some suggestions for getting back to the roots of this holiday:

Call your mom just to say “I love you,”even if you talk to her or see her on a regular basis.
If your mom has passed away, honor her by fixing one of her favorite recipes or telling a favorite story about her.

Give the gift of time. Rather than waiting for Mother’s Day as the day to start planting flowers in her garden, suggest that, as her gift, you will help her plant flowers in her garden together. Make it a tradition that you both look forward to and cherish.

Don’t forget the other 364 days a year.

The following prayer is one offered to us by one of our mothers:

The demands on my time, attention, and energy draw me in many directions, Lord. Yet, without you I can do nothing, and with you all things are possible. Enlighten my mind to discern rightly what is essential. Guide me to evaluate all things with the eyes of faith. Help me to reserve a place in the busyness of each day to be renewed and strengthened, to thank you for your gifts and listen to your voice. O Beloved Lord and Maker of all souls, who desires that I should come to you, draw me by your grace to desire to love you more. Amen.
