This Collection supports Catholic organizations that provide food, shelter, medical care, catechesis, and companionship for the lonely in a region still struggling in the aftermath of atheistic Soviet rule. VALENTINE’S DAY: St. Valentine was a Roman priest. He was sent to prison because he helped Christians who were persecuted by the Roman ruler. While in prison he converted 46 members of his guards family to Christianity. In Medieval England, a tradition began stating that birds chose their mates on the feast of St. Valentine. As this date approached, a young woman sent a letter to the person to whom she was engaged telling him: I would be for you a true and loving Valentine. Ever since February 14th has been known as Valentine’s Day.
