Mission Intention for December
That especially in mission countries, Christians may show with acts of fraternal love that the Child born in the stable of Bethlehem is the luminous Hope of the world.
BAPTISM: Haiden Henry Waldron, son of Calvin and Sarah (Laware) Waldron became a member of the Catholic community through the Sacrament of Baptism on November 25th.
CATHOLIC CALENDARS: Calendars for 2009 indicating the special holy days and saints of the Catholic Church are available for your home or workplace. This year they are on the theme of Christian stewardship.
ADVENT 2008: But a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom. The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him: a spirit of wisdom and of understanding, a spirit of counsel and of strength, a spirit of knowledge and of fear of the Lord, and his delight shall be the fear of the Lord”
Advent is a season of hope, joy and love. The prophets of the Old Testament gave voice to God’s Word of promise. Looking backwards at those prophets, we look forward to Christmas morning and to the day when Christ will come again. We prepare for the coming of Jesus as Mary did by making our hearts a cradle for Him to dwell within forever. Special personal and family activities for Advent can be found at www.dioogdensburg.org/Advent
SETON CHRISTMAS DINNER: The Annual Seton Christmas Dinner is being held Sunday December 14th from Noon to 5 PM at Seton Catholic High School (206 New York Rd). A traditional turkey dinner will be served with new items such as macaroni & cheese and apple crisp. Adults $9, Seniors (55+) $8, Children 12-5 yrs $5, Under 5 are FREE and take outs $9. All seating is handicap accessible. Purchase a chance to win a homemade quilt or $1,000 CASH. Do some shopping at our Silent Auction, Cash & Carry, "Gift from Home" or wreath sale. The Seton students are in the giving spirit and will sponsor a toy drive and food drive for local agencies. Come and enjoy great food, friendly faces and entertainment by the Singing Santa. All proceeds benefits Seton Academy & Seton Catholic.
EXTEND AN INVITATION: Advent is a time of hope. Someone is hopeful in becoming Catholic – waiting for an invitation. A Catholic who has fallen away from practicing the faith is hopeful someone will extend a welcome to “Come Home.” Is God calling you to reach out to the hopeful? Remember, all are welcome in Christ. An informative web site for a seeking or returning person is www.OnceCatholic.org.
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: When I go to the chapel, I put myself before the good God and say to Him, ‘Lord, here I am, give me what you wish . . . then I tell Him all that comes into my mind. (St. Catherine Laboure). Eucharistic Adoration is held throughout the year every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 6 am to 9 pm at St. John’s Church Adoration Chapel, downstairs. Everyone is invited to spend some quiet time with Jesus anytime during these hours. For more information about spending a special hour with Jesus weekly, or becoming a substitute, please call 561-5083 or email us at Sjohnsadoration@aol.com
MARRIAGE TIP: When couples argue it's tempting to answer a criticism with another criticism or excuse. "If you hadn't been late, I wouldn't have to rush around." Try a simple "I'm sorry." Find more Marriage Rx at: www.foryourmarriage.org
CHRISTMAS FLOWERS COLLECTION: As in the past you will find envelopes at the entrance of the church for donations for Christmas flowers and decorations. Place the envelopes with your contribution in the collection basket. Your generous contribution is very much appreciated.
GIVING TREE: Through the assistance of the Ladies of St. James and some students in the Confirmation class the Giving Tree for Christmas is now available. Your gifts will need to be under the Giving Tree at the end of Masses on December 14. Tags with the first name of a child have been placed on the tree for which you can bring a gift. Last year St. James Parishioners were VERY responsive to this act of giving to needy children
HOLIDAY BRUNCH: The Ladies of St. James Annual Christmas Brunch will be held at our Parish Center on Sunday, December 7th, after the 10:00 AM Mass. The Brunch will be catered this year rather than being held at Cricket’s as has been done for the past few years. Would those who wish to attend our Christmas Brunch on December 7th at the Parish Center please sign-up by November 30th? The reservation sheet is in the entrance to the church. Payment for the meal is at the time of the brunch.
