FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER - VOCATIONS SUNDAY:
Today's Gospel reading from John is the parable of the good shepherd. Jesus relates to his followers that believing in him is in essence the same as the shepherd whose sheep recognize only his voice; there may be others who try to summon the sheep but they will run away in fear. With their shepherd, the sheep feel safe and secure. So, too, will we feel safe and secure with Jesus as our only shepherd.
VOCATION PRAYER
God our Father, You call us to share in the mission of the Church. We beg you, O God, that all those whom you are calling to serve in the harvest field of this diocese and beyond may heed Your voice and serve Your people in faithful love. May Your Holy Spirit empower them to respond with a willing and generous, “Yes.” We ask You to choose someone from this family to be a priest, sister or brother. We promise to support that person with our prayers and encouragement. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

VISIT OF POPE BENEDICT XVI:
Pope Benedict XVI will be visiting the United States April 15-20. He was born Joseph Alois Ratzinger in Marktl am Inn, Germany on April 16, 1927. In his youth he was exposed to the horrors of Nazi Germany. He received a doctorate in theology from the University of Munich in 1957. His lifelong passion for learning and teaching led him to serve as a professor of dogma and the history of dogmas at German universities for 26 years. He is one of the few Bishops now living who participated in the Second Vatican Council (1963-65). On April 19, 2005 he was elected the 265th Pope and the first German in 948 years. He adopted the name Benedict XVI in honor of St. Benedict, the founder of Western monasticism. The Church teaches that the Pope is the successor of St. Peter whom Jesus appointed as the first head of the Church (Mt 16:18). The Papacy is the oldest continuing institution in the world. EWTN will offer viewers unprecedented continuous television coverage of the entire visit of Pope Benedict. His itinerary is on the web site www.osv.com/papalvisit.
The one who has hope lives differently; the one who hopes has been granted the gift of new life.
(Pope Benedict XVI, Spe Salvi)
