PARISH NURSE: St. James Parish welcomes two parishioners who have completed training in the ministry of Parish Nurse at the Mercy Care Parish Nursing Program. A Parish Nurse is an active RN licensed in New York State with the specialized practice that focuses on whole person health and spiritual care. MISSIONARY COOPERATION APPEAL: The St. James Parish Missionary Coop Appeal is scheduled for next weekend. This year it is for the Diocese of Fairbanks in Alaska. The Diocese of Fairbanks is a missionary diocese stretching from the Canadian border to Russia to the Arctic Ocean. Many of its Catholics are Eskimos and Athabascan Indians. There are 20 active priests working in the diocese, roughly one priest for every 20,000 square miles. Many of the parishes and missions see a priest every other month. Celebrations of the Word with Holy Communion replaces Sunday Mass when a priest is unavailable. Only a small number of parishes are able to support themselves financially. KNOM, its radio station in the city of Nome, provides much of the spiritual and religious information to the Catholics. FUNERAL: A funeral was celebrated this week for Shirley Messier.
